Another week has flown by as we inch closer to the end of January.  There isn’t much new for the blog this week, so this is going to be a shorter blog post.

MAP Results Coming Home in Students’ Backpacks Today
In your child's backpack, please find the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) results for all students who took the Winter MAP test. MAP tests determine your child's instructional level and measure academic growth over time.

For an informational Parent Letter on reading the MAP report and a digital copy (in English and Spanish) of the MAP brochure, please CLICK HERE

If you have additional questions about your child's MAP data, please contact your child's teacher, the building principal, or Jeanne Spiller, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning at (847) 459-4260.

Erin's Law
Erin Merryn gave our Woodlawn students an amazing, heart felt talk about the trauma she endured and the resilience she continues to show to this day.  Our student body was a great audience, possibly the best I have ever seen for an assembly.

Happy Chinese New Year from the parent group Guiding Coalition of Interculturalism!

Community Service Club
The Community Service Club is sponsoring a collection of cards and miscellaneous items to send to the troops overseas.  In conjunction with Operation Care Package, we are collecting items in each homeroom to send to our troops overseas.  Each teacher has a bag in their homeroom where students can put the collected items over the next three weeks.  Be on the lookout for any of the following items to send to our heroes: cards, card games ( like Uno), footballs, magazines, any non-chocolate candy, microwave popcorn, lip balm (this is a HUGE need), dried meats, crackers or snacks, gym, Soduko books, small games, prepackaged cookies, body wash or shampoo, trail mix, sunflower seeds, dice games, Yahtzee and/or adult coloring books or pencils.  Again, we will be collecting over the next three weeks, so let’s support our troops!

Band and Orchestra Need Help!
Call for Volunteers!
Many volunteers are still needed to assist at the 2017 IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Music Association) Solo & Ensemble Contest, hosted by District 96 at Woodlawn Middle School on Sat., Feb. 4, from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.  We urgently need volunteers to work shifts as room monitors, concession sales, and parking assistants.  Even 2 hours of your time would be much appreciated!  Your student does not need to participate in IGSMA for you to volunteer.  High school students are also encouraged to volunteer, and their service hours will be recognized.  To be directed to our Sign-Up Genius webpage to sign up for available jobs and shifts/times please CLICK HERE

PTO Executive Board Openings --I have been informed that the  Woodlawn PTO will have a couple of opening on our Executive Board next year.  If you are interested, please send an e-mail to me and I will forward your interest to our PTO President for next year, Missy Stevens.  Selections will happen before April, but send me your interest right away. There are still spots open!!

Louder Than A Bomb - 8th Grade
Many parents and students are aware that there were disturbing texts posted by the presenter from our Young Authors presenter last week to her personal Twitter account.  I handled many e-mail’s and phone calls about this situation and almost every person told me how motivated their child was by this presentation and then disheartened by the response of the author.  I am exceptionally proud of our students, the way they embraced this program and the heart and soul they poured into their poetry last week.  Your feelings about this matter are absolutely valid and my hope is that you continue to write with passion in the future.  I will be meeting with the executives of this company next week.

Finally, Middle School is a difficult time for our children.  Increased expectations in the classroom,  friends are being made and sometimes lost, their bodies are maturing like crazy, additional pressure from all adults, and whatever else may be happening in their lives.  Although children can go into different levels of crisis at any point of a school year, I find that during this time of the year, difficulties get magnified.  From my point of view, I have excellent Social Workers and an amazing School Counselor.  As a parent, if you ever have a concern about your child and would like insight into what we see from your student, feel free to contact me and I will assist you or get your question to the right people.  My hope is that every student has an enjoyable middle school experience and know that our team will work with parents to make sure we can support each other.  My advice (and take that for what it is worth) is that you have conversations with your child about how they are doing.  I recognize that getting information out of your 11 to 14 year old is tough, but it can be done.  Dinner talk, car talk (my favorite-they are stuck), going to some kind of an event, etc..The key is to talk to your middle schooler. Think about your middle school years...

Finally #2, why couldn’t I have been at a wedding last weekend when the Packers were absolutely demolished?

Have a good weekend.
