April 24, 2015

We are quickly approaching May, which will be the last full month of school for our 8th graders.  Tonight is our 8th grade mixer with Twin Groves Middle School at Stevenson High School in their Wood Commons. This event goes from 7:30-9:30p.m. and promises to be a fun event.  As I walked through the halls this morning, many students said that they will be going to this event and are looking forward to the good times.
There will be a DJ, snacks, water and giveaways which include a free trip to iFly in Rosemont.  As a gift for our children this past holiday season, my wife and I took our four children to iFly and it was a very cool experience.  Check it out online, my kids loved it!  Remember that this is a free event and I hope to see all of our 8th graders at Stevenson tonight.

Spring Book Fair
Our Spring Book Fair was a hit!  Thank you to everyone who came out to Barnes & Noble and supported the Spring Book Fair.  The band, orchestra, chorus and scholastic bowl team all performed and it was a lot of fun.  Great job by our PTO volunteers, and thank you to all of the families and staff who stopped by to support the school.  Special thanks to the P.E. staff for coming to B&N to serve food for the families that ordered.  Once again this year, they used strong arm tactics to win the serve the students competition.  I have a new plan for next year.

iPad Issues
There have been a bunch of iPads with shattered glass lately.  Please have a conversation with your student about taking care of these devices.  It is critical that they have them in class and available.

PARCC Testing
PARCC Testing continues in two weeks.
May 5 & 6  8th Grade
May 7 & 8 7th Grade
May 11 & 13      6th Grade

A Message From Ann Tripp (Social Worker)  & Vail Kieser (Assistant Principal)
Parents, since your student last wore their shorts in September or October, there is a good chance they have grown and the shorts aren’t fitting your student appropriately.  This is especially true with our young ladies as some of their short shorts have been more revealing than is appropriate for school.

Texting When Sick
If your child is not feeling well at school and they happen to text you to pick them up, please make them go to the nurse first.  I need everyone to support the school structures and run illnesses and/or any sickness through Mrs. Crawford, our school nurse.

iPad
At the end of this school year, we will be collecting all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade iPads. The reason for this collection is that we will be getting iPads which have a greater storage capacity on all devices. When students return for the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, they will receive their iPad in homeroom class.
We will be collecting 8th grade iPads at the end of the school day on May 28th.  6th and 7th grade iPads will be collected at the end of the day on Thursday, June 4th.

Upcoming Event for 8th Graders
Lloyd Bachrach returns to Woodlawn, sharing his story and providing a memorable, moving and inspirational motivational speech.  This will occur on Friday May 8th during 6th period for our 8th graders.  This is an assembly that is very special and should not to be missed by any of our 8th grade students.

Tornado Donations
Thank you to the Woodlawn students for donating $75 that we have sent to the Fairdale Fire Department collection fund.

6TH Grade Dental Exam
The deadline is getting close!!!!   All 6th Grade students must have a their dental exam handed in by May 15, 2915 as required by Illinois State Law & District 96.  Many of you already accomplished this, however, we are still waiting for a few of these dental exams.  Parents, please make sure you get this one done.  The dental exam could have been completed between the dates of November 15, 2013, and May 15, 2015.

Finally,  for those of you with kids who seem oblivious to anything except for themselves, there is hope.  As many of you know, my oldest son plays college baseball for a small university  in the city.  On Tuesday evening (on a freezing cold night), I went to his game and had the thrill of seeing him hit a three run home run.  Obviously a proud dad moment, and being a baseball nut myself, I have collected numerous baseballs through the years and either label them for their accomplishment or simply admire the signature on the ball.  Because of the configuration of the seating at his home field, the fans all sit in the bleachers.  His home run ball ricocheted off the bleacher seats in front of me and back onto the field. I shouted to the outfielder to throw me the ball, but he threw it to the bullpen catcher instead.  Oh well.  Now the joke in our family is that it is Greg’s (my son) world and we all just live in it.  He’s a nice kid but he doesn’t always think of how others are impacted but some of his decisions.  So after the game as I waited for him to tell him good game, he walked up to me, reached into his pocket, handed me the home run ball and said, “I thought you might like this”.  Keep the faith everyone, they grow up to be amazing people.
