Author Visit
Yangsook Choi grew up in Korea. She started drawing at age 4 and loved telling her grandma scary stories. After moving to New York to pursue her art, she has written and illustrated many books for young readers including, The Name Jar and New Cat. We are fortunate to have her visit our school in November. She will be seeing all Early Childhood and Kindergarten students. If you are interested in an autographed copy of her books, please fill out the following form and send to school by October 28th.

Bears That Care!
At Willow Grove we focus on the whole child, emphasizing the academic and social emotional learning for our students. You may remember earlier this year I shared our “Willow Grove Bears that Care” pledge, that we begin every day with:

You may have heard a couple weeks back that our students recently were introduced to our newest Willow Grove resident, Buddy the Bear! Buddy helps us learn all about social emotional tools and strategies here at Willow Grove. Our PTO so graciously helped us to adopt Buddy, and the children couldn’t be more excited to have him here with us. Every month there is a social emotional theme that Buddy and our teachers help us to understand and practice. This month of October we are focusing on greetings and partings! Saying “hello” and “goodbye” to our friends and teachers makes everyone feel special and valued! You can help your child with this skill by reminding them to greet others in your natural day-to-day interactions. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who made this beautiful bulletin board display as a regular reminder of our monthly theme!
Family Educator Conferences
Our fall Family Educator Conferences will be held on Nov. 25th from 5pm-7pm and Nov. 26th from 2pm - 7pm. Sign-ups for conferences will be sent via email on Nov. 5th after the school day. The format of our fall conferences is teacher-led. In the spring, students will lead the conversation about their learning. Please know that if you cannot attend a conference during the scheduled days, your child’s teacher will work with you to set a time for a 15-minute phone conference.
Vacation Homework Requests
Though removing students from school for vacations is generally discouraged, we recognize the importance of family vacations and the experiences they provide for students. Please know that specific assignments replicating classroom instruction are not provided. Students are encouraged to explore books, be read to, read and journal while away from the classroom. Please read the Student Absence Due to Vacations section of our Parent/Student Handbook for full details.

31st- Halloween Party (Parade 10am; Parties 10:30-11:15, 1:30-2:15)
The following is repeat information from last week's blog, but still current. You can skip this if you already reviewed last week's message.
Halloween
It’s hard to believe it’s already time to talk about Halloween, but I’ve been seeing costumes pop up at the stores already! Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I especially love watching your children in all of their excitement! I like to provide details about Halloween early so you will know parameters about costumes as you are choosing the perfect one! There is also an opportunity for you to view our parade I’d like to share with you.
10:00 AM - Parade - Parents may stand on the front sidewalk to view our parade! If there is rain, we will need to cancel the outdoor parade. We cannot allow parents in the school to view the indoor parade, for obvious security reasons. Let's cross our fingers for a beautiful fall day!
10:30-11:15 - Party (Kindergarten, Structured, and AM Blended) - Only approved PTO parent volunteers may enter the building for the classroom parties. Our room parents put together a fun celebration in each classroom!
Blended Program - Blended will have 2 parties (one for AM and one for PM). Again, only PTO approved volunteers may attend the party. Blended PM parents may bring their child in just for the parade if they'd like. Parents must provide transportation to and from the school parade. Students must leave after the parade and come back when their typical program starts. If you choose to bring your child to the parade please notify your child’s teacher so they know to expect your child. You will drop them off in the office and pick them up there after the parade. Please bypass the line for scanning ID’s for the party and come right in to retrieve your child.
Costumes - As you are choosing or creating a costume for your child, please keep them school appropriate. No blood or gore and no bare tummies in school. Children may not wear masks. Weapons, real or pretend, are NEVER allowed on school grounds. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR PTO PARTY VOLUNTEERS:

Parents attending the parties may not bring additional family members, other children, etc. We need everyone to abide by this and will have to ask you to leave if you come with other attendees. For your sake and ours, please do not put us in this situation. We have many individuals entering our building for the party and cannot accommodate additional individuals.

Every PTO volunteer approved to come into our school MUST have their license or ID scanned through our security system to enter. You have to bring this with you or you will not be able to enter. There is always a very long line at this first party, so please anticipate this. We highly encourage PTO room party volunteers to swing by Willow sometime in the month of October before October 31st to have your license scanned, which will speed up the process. The more people who come in early to be scanned, the shorter the line! You may also come in the day of the Halloween party BEFORE THE PARADE to have your license scanned. We will clear out the office just before the parade starts, so please come early, as lines are long for this first party.

¡Hace unas semanas atrás se les presentó a nuestros estudiantes a un nuevo residente de Willow Grove, Buddy el Oso! Buddy ayuda a nuestro equipo aprender sobre las herramientas y estrategias aquí en Willow Grove. Nuestro PTO nos ayudó a adoptar a Buddy, y los niños están muy emocionados de tenerlo aquí con nosotros. Cada mes hay un tema socioemocional con el cual Buddy y nuestros maestros nos ayuda a entender y practicar. ¡Este mes de octubre nos estamos enfocando en los saludos y las despedidas! Decir “hola” y “adiós” a nuestros amigos y maestros nos hace sentir especial! Usted puede recordarle a su hijo sobre esta habilidad diciéndole que debe saludar a los demás en el día a día. ¡Gracias a nuestros maravillosos padres voluntarios que hicieron un gran trabajo con nuestro tablero de anuncios, esto nos ayuda a recordar el tema del mes!
Conferencias para Padres
Nuestras Conferencias de Otoño para Padres serán el 25 de noviembre de 5pm-7pm y el 26 de noviembre de 2pm - 7pm. Usted podrá inscribirse para las conferencias en línea a partir del 5 de noviembre. El formato de nuestras conferencias de otoño es dirigido por los docentes. En la primavera, los estudiantes guiarán la conversación sobre su aprendizaje. Por favor tenga en cuenta que si no puede asistir a la conferencia en los días programados, el maestro de su hijo programará una conferencia telefónica de 15 minutos.
Solicitud de Tareas durante las Vacaciones
Aunque no se fomenta el retiro de estudiantes para ir de vacaciones, entendemos la importancia de las vacaciones familiares y las experiencias que esto ofrece a los estudiantes. Por favor tenga en cuenta que no se ofrecerá una copia de la enseñanza de tareas específicas. Se les anima a los estudiantes a explorar libros, que se les lea, leer y escribir en un diario mientras están fuera del salón. FECHAS PRÓXIMAS EN OCTUBRE
31- Fiesta de Halloween (Desfile 10am; Fiestas 10:30-11:15, 1:30-2:15)
A continuación verá información repetida de la semana pasada, pero está actualizada. Si gusta saltar esta parte del mensaje si ya lo leyó la semana pasada.
Halloween
¡No puedo creer que es hora de hablar sobre Halloween, pero ya he visto disfraces en las tiendas! Halloween siempre ha sido uno de mis días festivos favoritos. ¡Me encanta ver a sus niños tan emocionados! ¡Quiero ofrecerles detalles sobre Halloween desde ahora para que el disfraz que elija esté dentro de nuestros parámetros y sea el disfraz perfecto! También tendrá la oportunidad de ver nuestro desfile y quiero compartir los detalles con usted.
10:00 AM - Desfile - ¡Los padres pueden observar el desfile desde nuestra banqueta de enfrente! En caso de que llueva, no podremos tener nuestro desfile afuera. Por motivos de seguridad, no permitiremos que los padres observen nuestro desfile si se lleva a cabo dentro de la escuela. ¡Crucemos los dedos para que tengamos un día otoñal maravilloso!
10:30-11:15 - Fiesta (Kindergarten, Estructurado, y Mixto de la mañana) - Únicamente los padres aprobados como voluntarios del PTO podrán ingresar a la escuela para participar en las fiestas de los salones. ¡Nuestros padres de salón organizan una celebración divertida para cada salón!
Programa Mixto - Tendrán 2 fiestas (uno para la mañana y otra para tarde). Quiero recordarles, solo los voluntarios del PTO que estén aprobados podrán asistir a la fiesta. Los padres de la clase Mixta de la tarde pueden traer a su hijo solo para el desfile si así lo desean. Los padres deben proporcionar el transporte de ida y vuelta del desfile. Los estudiantes deberán irse después del desfile y regresar cuando empiece su programa regular. Si usted elige traer a su hijo al desfile por favor notifique al maestro de su hijo. Usted deberá dejar a su hijo en la oficina y deberá recogerlo después del desfile. No tiene que hacer fila para escanear su ID, puede recoger a su hijo en cuanto llegue.
Disfraces - Mientras elija o diseñe el disfraz de su hijo, por favor tenga en cuenta que debe ser apropiado para la escuela. No se permiten disfraces sangrientos ni barriguitas al descubierto en la escuela. Los niños no pueden usar máscaras. JAMÁS se permitirán las armas, sean verdaderas o de juguete. ¡Estoy ansiosa por ver su creatividad!
AVISOS IMPORTANTES PARA LOS VOLUNTARIOS DE LAS FIESTAS DE PTO:

Los padres que asistan a las fiestas no pueden traer a más familiares, a otros niños, etc. Pedimos que por favor cumplan con esto o tendrá que irse si trae a más gente. Por el bien suyo y el de nosotros, por favor no permita que suceda esta situación incómoda. Habrá mucha gente ingresando a nuestra escuela para la fiesta y no podemos admitir a más personas.

Cada voluntario aprobado del PTO que ingrese a nuestra escuela DEBERÁ tener su licencia o su ID (identificación)para ser escaneado en nuestro sistema de seguridad para poder entrar. Usted debe traer esto con usted, de otra manera no podrá entrar. Por favor tome en cuenta que la fila de la primera fiesta siempre va a ser larga. Recomendamos a los voluntarios de las fiestas de salones que vengan a Willow cualquier día durante el mes de octubre antes del 31 para que se escanee su licencia y se acelere este proceso. ¡Entre más personas lleguen a presentar su licencia para ser escaneada, más corta será la fila! Si quiere, puede venir el día de la fiesta de Halloween, ANTES DEL DESFILE para escanear su licencia. Vamos a procurar que la oficina esté libre de personas justo antes del desfile, así que por favor venga temprano, ya que las filas son largas para esta primera fiesta.
