Kindergarten STEM Club- September 23rd
Join Willow Grove’s Junior STEM Club. We will meet every Monday to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related activities. Our mission is to foster curiosity through hands-on activities and experiments that are fun, relevant, and student-centered. Sign-up for an eight-week session using this Google Form.
We are ready to begin our Willow Grove Junior STEM Club!! Join Mrs. Martinez and Ms. Filippo on Monday's from 3:00-3:45pm for all kinds of fun! Make new friends and participate in STEM activities! Adult supervision will be provided at Willow Grove from 2:45-3:00, when the club begins. You may wish to send a snack from the approved snack list for your child to eat during this time. There are only a limited number of spots available, so sign up quickly! We will fill the club to capacity for seats and all other students will be placed on a waiting list. International Day of Peace - Spirit Wear Day - Friday, Sept 20
Peace Day provides a powerful and inspiring opportunity to engage children and youth in diverse activities related to peace, unity and making a positive difference in their world. Meaningful involvement can help set a tone of respect and unity early in the academic year. Next week we'll be sprinkling in discussions, reading, and art about peace. We will even enjoy peaceful yoga in our gym class and special songs in music! On Friday, children can wear Willow Grove spirit wear or our school colors, purple or gray, to celebrate the week of peaceful activities!
I'm sorry to say, if you're looking to purchase spirit wear, this is not available. We only have our Willow Grove shirts for those who registered during early registration. Please don't worry. Many children don't have them. A purple and/or gray shirt is just perfect! Or grab a gray shirt and some purple t-shirt paint and let your child paint their own Buddy the Bear on their shirt! A fun project for the weekend!
Picture Day Reminder
September 26 is Picture Day for all Willow Grove students. October 28 is Picture Retake Day.
Book Drive! Out with the old, in with the new! September 23-26
We are collecting gently used books for a great cause during our Scholastic Book Fair (see PTO blog for details)! Bernie's Book Bank collects and donates books to at-risk children. It is a fantastic program. If you'd like to learn more, click here. The book fair will be running within this time, so this is a great time to clean out those bookshelves and make room for some new finds from our book fair! You may send books in with your child to donate between September 23-26 or bring them into our office yourself. We'll also be collecting your donations at our Ice Cream Social on September 26th from 6-7:30 PM where the Scholastic Book Fair will also be taking place.
Halloween
It’s hard to believe it’s already time to talk about Halloween, but I’ve been seeing costumes pop up at the stores already! Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I especially love watching your children in all of their excitement! I like to provide details about Halloween early so you will know parameters about costumes as you are choosing the perfect one! There is also an opportunity for you to view our parade I’d like to share with you.
10:00 AM - Parade - Parents may stand on the front sidewalk to view our parade! If there is rain, we will need to cancel the outdoor parade. We cannot allow parents in the school to view the indoor parade, for obvious security reasons. Let's cross our fingers for a beautiful fall day!
10:30-11:15 - Party (Kindergarten, Structured, and AM Blended) - Only approved PTO parent volunteers may enter the building for the classroom parties. Our room parents put together a fun celebration in each classroom!
Blended Program - Blended will have 2 parties (one for AM and one for PM). Again, only PTO approved volunteers may attend the party. Blended PM parents may bring their child in just for the parade if they'd like. Parents must provide transportation to and from the school parade. Students must leave after the parade and come back when their typical program starts. If you choose to bring your child to the parade please notify your child’s teacher so they know to expect your child. You will drop them off in the office and pick them up there after the parade. Please bypass the line for scanning ID’s for the party and come right in to retrieve your child.
Costumes - As you are choosing or creating a costume for your child, please keep them school appropriate. No blood or gore and no bare tummies in school. Children may not wear masks. Weapons, real or pretend, are NEVER allowed on school grounds. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR PTO PARTY VOLUNTEERS:

Parents attending the parties may not bring additional family members, other children, etc. We need everyone to abide by this and will have to ask you to leave if you come with other attendees. For your sake and ours, please do not put us in this situation. We have many individuals entering our building for the party and cannot accommodate additional individuals.

Every PTO volunteer approved to come into our school MUST have their license or ID scanned through our security system to enter. You have to bring this with you or you will not be able to enter. There is always a very long line at this first party, so please anticipate this. We highly encourage PTO room party volunteers to swing by Willow sometime in the month of October before October 31st to have your license scanned, which will speed up the process. The more people who come in early to be scanned, the shorter the line! You may also come in the day of the Halloween party BEFORE THE PARADE to have your license scanned. We will clear out the office just before the parade starts, so please come early, as lines are long for this first party.
Bus Evacuation Drill
All students participated in a bus safety overview and evacuation drill this week and did a wonderful job!
Missed MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Scores Sent Sept. 6?
Some parents have reported they did not receive their student's MAP scores sent by email last Friday afternoon, Sept. 6.
Delivery by two identified email service providers proved to be problematic, with reports of that specific email going directly to a spam folder.
If you did not receive the email–which included links to info about understanding student growth, RIT scores, and general info about the MAP assessment–please contact Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning Jeanne Spiller.

The following is repeat information from last week's blog, but still current. You can skip this if you already reviewed last week's message.
Willow Walk - Wednesday, September 25
On September 25th, we'll be having our second annual "Willow Walk." Due to the age of our students (early childhood and kindergarten only), this is a reasonable walk designed just for them! The walk will promote positive school unity and give us all a brief activity to enjoy as a school family. This is not a 5k-like event. This is much shorter given the age of our students.
Please be sure to dress your children for walking in mind and for the weather. We will go out if it is cold. If it is rainy, we will try to schedule a rain date. Let's cross our fingers for a beautiful day!
Children will be provided with water after the walk (thank you, PTO!).
Parents may view the walk from the designated viewing area. The viewing area is on our front sidewalk/grassy area surrounding the flagpole, along Checker Dr. Do not stand on the circle drive or walk onto our campus during the walk. We must maintain a safe and orderly environment for all children. The walk begins at about 10:00 and kids will circle past the viewing area one time for you to cheer them on! ;)
A Special Note for Parents of PM Blended Early Childhood Students
As we want this to be an opportunity for all of our students, you are welcome to bring your child to attend. Please bring your child to the Willow Grove office at 9:30 a.m. where they will meet their teacher to participate in the walk. You may view the walk from our designated viewing area (by the flagpole) and come to the main office after the event to collect your child. If you would like to bring your child to the walk, please email his/her teacher to let them know, so they know who to expect.
Willow Walk Parent Volunteer Opportunity
Please read the following details to know if you would be interested in signing up to volunteer for our Willow Walk event. If you are interested in volunteering, CLICK HERE. Sign-up closes on Wednesday, September 18th.
Parent volunteers will need to check-in at Willow at 9:00 a.m. It's fine to come a little earlier (during kindergarten drop-off starting at 8:45 a.m.) as we'll need to process everyone upon entry. You must bring your valid license or ID, as volunteers need to be scanned into our security system. Please come to the main entrance and into our office. We'll get everyone checked in, and then volunteers will work with our PE teachers (Mrs. O’Gara, Mr. Boyd, and Ms. Degen) to get in place for the walk.
We will have some parents surrounding the perimeter of the walking path to keep our walkers on track and others to help distribute waters to students coming in from the walk.
Volunteer positions are limited. If we have too many and can't use all, please know you are welcome to view the walk from the front lawn/sidewalk by the flagpole. We will contact all who sign-up to let you know if we are able to utilize you as a volunteer or not. If you are not able to volunteer but are viewing the walk, you must stay on the front sidewalk/grass area by our flagpole. We need to keep an orderly event for the safety of all children. Do not walk further onto the grounds of the school.
Volunteers need to know that at this age students may see their parents and want to stay with them. Please do not encourage them and have them continue to walk. Volunteers need to stay in their positions and may not join the walk. If your child has a difficult time separating, there may be other volunteer opportunities that may work better. Please consider this so we can ensure your child enjoys this event!
The walk officially begins at about 10 a.m. and will wrap up at about 10:30 a.m. Thank you so much for volunteering. We appreciate your support and love having you visit our school! If you are interested in volunteering, CLICK HERE.
Thought Exchange Partnership - Parent Opportunity
Now seeking parents to fill open positions on our district Thought Exchange Partnership. If you are looking for a way to get involved, be a voice for Willow Grove, and learn about the wonderful things happening in District 96, please consider joining. If you are interested in this opportunity, email me ([email protected]) to express interest by September 16, 2019. The first meeting is September 26th. Please know this will be a lottery for open spots. I will contact everyone to let you know if you have been selected!
Members serve a two-year term on a rotation basis. Once any two-year term is served, new members will be identified. Unless a parent has children at Willow Grove for both years of their term, they will serve as a representative for their elementary school for the final year if they are able.
If all parent review positions are not filled, members may serve additional terms to fill parent review roster.
Purpose:
*To share with parents information regarding district goals and initiatives, curricular and instructional innovations, programs and other informational topics. (i.e. District Goals, MAP & PARCC Results)
*To review school board or school code required topics (i.e. Parent/Student Handbook, Discipline Policy, Grants, Calendar)
*To understand parent perceptions and solicit feedback on school district topics to assist the district in communication and planning.

Día Internacional de la Paz - Día del Orgullo Escolar - 20 de septiembre
El Día de la Paz ofrece una oportunidad poderosa e inspiradora para que los niños y jóvenes participen en diversas actividades relacionadas a la paz, la solidaridad y para hacer una diferencia positiva en su mundo. La participación significativa fortalece el respeto y la solidaridad al inicio del año académico. La próxima semana, hablaremos sobre la paz, leeremos varios libros y estaremos haciendo proyectos de arte. ¡Hasta disfrutaremos de yoga en nuestra clase de educación física y de canciones especiales durante la clase de música! ¡El viernes, los niños podrán usar ropa con colores de nuestra escuela (morado o gris) o ropa de orgullo escolar de Willow Grove, para celebrar la semana de actividades pacíficas!
Siento comunicarles que no está a la venta ropa de orgullo escolar. Solamente tenemos nuestras camisetas de Willow Grove para aquellos que se inscribieron temprano. No se preocupe. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes no las tienen. ¡Una camiseta morada y/o gris es suficiente! ¡O simplemente dígale a su hijo que pinte una camiseta gris con pintura morada y así podrá crear su propio Buddy el Oso en su camiseta! ¡Un proyecto divertido para el fin de semana!
Aviso del Día de Fotos
El 26 de septiembre es el día de fotos para todos nuestros estudiantes de Willow Grove. El 28 de octubre podrá volver a tomar su foto en caso de que su hijo haya estado ausente.
¡Donación de Libros! ¡Fuera lo viejo, que venga lo nuevo! Del 23 al 26 de septiembre
¡Durante la Feria del Libro de Scholastic estaremos recaudando libros usados que estén en buenas condiciones para una gran causa (ver el blog del PTO para más detalles)! La Campaña de Donación de Libros de Bernie recauda libros y son donados a niños de bajos recursos. Es un fantástico programa. Si quiere saber más, haga clic aquí. ¡La feria del libro se llevará a cabo durante este tiempo, así que es un buen momento para que organices esos estantes de libros y hagas espacio para libros nuevos de nuestra feria! Puedes enviar los libros con su hijo entre el 23 de septiembre al 26 de septiembre para que sean donados o simplemente tráigalos a nuestra oficina. También estaremos recaudando donaciones durante nuestro evento Social de Helados el 26 de septiembre de 6 a 7:30 PM donde también se llevará a cabo la Feria del Libro de Scholastic.
Halloween
¡No puedo creer que es hora de hablar sobre Halloween, pero ya he visto disfraces en las tiendas! Halloween siempre ha sido uno de mis días festivos favoritos. ¡Me encanta ver a sus niños tan emocionados! ¡Quiero ofrecerles detalles sobre Halloween desde ahora para que el disfraz que elija esté dentro de nuestros parámetros y sea el disfraz perfecto! También tendrá la oportunidad de ver nuestro desfile y quiero compartir los detalles con usted.
10:00 AM - Desfile - ¡Los padres pueden observar el desfile desde nuestra banqueta de enfrente! En caso de que llueva, no podremos tener nuestro desfile afuera. Por motivos de seguridad, no permitiremos que los padres observen nuestro desfile si se lleva a cabo dentro de la escuela. ¡Crucemos los dedos para que tengamos un día otoñal maravilloso!
10:30-11:15 - Fiesta (Kindergarten, Estructurado, y Mixto de la mañana) - Únicamente los padres aprobados como voluntarios del PTO podrán ingresar a la escuela para participar en las fiestas de los salones. ¡Nuestros padres de salón organizan una celebración divertida para cada salón!
Programa Mixto - Tendrán 2 fiestas (uno para la mañana y otra para tarde). Quiero recordarles, solo los voluntarios de PTO aprobados podrán asistir a la fiesta. Los padres de la clase Mixta de la tarde pueden traer a su hijo solo para el desfile si así lo desean. Los padres deben proporcionar el transporte de ida y vuelta del desfile. Los estudiantes deberán irse después del desfile y regresar cuando empiece su programa regular. Si usted elige traer a su hijo al desfile por favor notifique al maestro de su hijo. Usted deberá dejar a su hijo en la oficina y deberá recogerlo después del desfile. No tiene que hacer fila para escanear su ID, puede recoger a su hijo en cuanto llegue.
Disfraces - Mientras elija o diseñe el disfraz de su hijo, por favor tenga en cuenta que debe ser apropiado para la escuela. No se permiten disfraces sangrientos ni pancitas al descubierto en la escuela. Los niños no pueden usar máscaras. JAMÁS se permitirán las armas, sean verdaderas o de juguete. ¡Estoy ansiosa por ver su creatividad!
AVISOS IMPORTANTES PARA LOS VOLUNTARIOS DE LAS FIESTAS DE PTO:

Los padres que asistan a las fiestas no pueden traer a más familiares, a otros niños, etc. Pedimos que por favor cumplan con esto o tendrá que irse si trae a más gente. Por el bien suyo y el de nosotros, por favor no permita que suceda esta situación incómoda. Habrá mucha gente ingresando a nuestra escuela para la fiesta y no podemos admitir a más personas.

Cada voluntario aprobado del PTO que ingrese a nuestra escuela DEBERÁ tener su licencia o su ID (identificación)para ser escaneado en nuestro sistema de seguridad para poder entrar. Usted debe traer esto con usted, de otra manera no podrá entrar. Por favor tome en cuenta que la fila de la primera fiesta siempre va a ser larga. Recomendamos a los voluntarios de las fiestas de salones que vengan a Willow cualquier día durante el mes de octubre antes del 31 para que se escanee su licencia y se acelere este proceso. ¡Entre más personas lleguen a presentar su licencia para ser escaneada, más corta será la fila! Si quiere, puede venir el día de la fiesta de Halloween, ANTES DEL DESFILE para escanear su licencia. Vamos a procurar que la oficina esté libre de personas justo antes del desfile, así que por favor venga temprano, ya que las filas son largas para esta primera fiesta.

Caminata de Willow - miércoles 25 de septiembre
El 25 de septiembre, tendremos nuestra segunda “Caminata Anual de Willow”. ¡Debido a la edad de nuestros estudiantes(solamente educación preescolar y kindergarten), esta es una caminata diseñada solo para ellos! Esta caminata promueve una solidaridad escolar positiva y nos ofrece una breve actividad para disfrutar como familia escolar. Esto no es una carrera de 5k. Es algo más corto, debido a la edad de nuestros estudiantes.
Por favor asegúrese de que sus hijos vistan con ropa adecuada para la caminata y para el clima. Saldremos aunque esté frío. Si está lloviendo, trataremos de programarlo para otro día. ¡Crucemos los dedos para un día hermoso!
Después de la caminata ofreceremos agua a los niños (¡gracias, PTO!).
Los padres podrán observar la caminata desde del área de observación. El área de observación está en frente de nuestra banqueta en el césped que rodea el asta de la bandera, por Checker Dr. No se coloque en la rotonda de la entrada ni camine en nuestro campus durante la caminata. Debemos mantener un lugar seguro y ordenado para todos nuestros niños. ¡La caminata empieza a las 10:00 y los niños caminarán alrededor del área de observación una vez para que usted los salude y los anime! ;)
Una Nota Especial para los Padres de Los Estudiantes de Preescolar Mixto de la Tarde
Queremos que esta sea una oportunidad para todos los estudiantes, podrá traer a su hijo. Traiga a su hijo a la oficina de Willow Grove a las 9:30 a.m. donde se reunirán con su maestra para participar en la caminata. Usted podrá observar la caminata desde el área designada de observación (por el asta) y venir a la oficina después del evento para recoger a su hijo. Si quiere traer a su hijo a la caminata, favor de enviar un correo electrónico al maestro de su hijo, para que sepan quién va a llegar.
Oportunidad para Padres Voluntarios Para la Caminata de Willow
Por favor lea los siguientes detalles para saber si está interesado en apuntarse para nuestra Caminata de Willow. Si está interesado en ser voluntario, HAGA CLIC AQUÍ. La fecha límite para apuntarse es el 18 de septiembre.
Los voluntarios deberán registrar su entrada en Willow a las 9:00 a.m. Podrá venir más temprano si gusta (durante la hora que deja a su estudiante de kindergarten empezando a las 8:45 a.m.) ya que tendremos que procesar a todas las personas que ingresan. Usted debe traer su licencia o su identificación, para escanearla en nuestro sistema de seguridad. Por favor venga por la entrada principal y a nuestra oficina. Después de registrar la entrada de cada uno, los voluntarios trabajarán con nuestros maestros de Educación Física (Mrs. O’Gara, Mr. Boyd, y Ms. Degen) para colocarse para la caminata.
Algunos padres estarán ubicados por el área de la caminata para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes se mantengan en el recorrido y otros padres estarán ofreciendo agua a los niños que terminan la caminata.

Si su hijo tiene dificultad al separarse de usted, quizás haya otra oportunidad que sea mejor. ¡Por favor considere esto para asegurar que su hijo disfrute del evento!

COLABORACIÓN DE INTERCAMBIO DE IDEAS - OPORTUNIDAD PARA LOS PADRES DE FAMILIA
Estamos en busca de padres para que se unan a la Colaboración de Intercambio de Ideas de nuestro distrito. Si usted busca participar activamente en Willow Grove, y aprender más sobre las cosas maravillosas que suceden en el Distrito 96, por favor considere esta oportunidad. ¡Si está interesado en esta oportunidad, me puede contactar al ([email protected]) para el 16 de septiembre! Habrá una lotería para los espacios disponibles. ¡Me comunicaré con usted para dejarle saber si fue seleccionado! La primera reunión será el 26 de septiembre en la noche.
Propósito:
*Compartir información con los padres sobre los objetivos e iniciativas del distrito, innovaciones curriculares de enseñanza, programas y otros temas informativos. (por ejemplo, objetivos del distrito, resultados de MAP y PARCC)
*Repasar temas requeridos por el consejo escolar o código escolar (por ejemplo, Manual de Padres/Estudiantes, Reglas de Disciplina, Becas, Calendario)
*Entender las percepciones de los padres y solicitar retroalimentación sobre los temas escolares del distrito para ayudar al distrito en la comunicación y la planificación.
Resultados de MAP (Medidas Académicas de Progreso) Enviado el 6 de septiembre
Algunos padres han reportado que no recibieron los resultados de MAP de su estudiante que se enviaron el viernes 6 de septiembre.
Se identificaron dos problemas con los proveedores de servicio de correo electrónico, con reportes de ese correo electrónico específico enviado directamente a spam.
Si usted no recibió el correo-- que incluye los enlaces a la información de cómo entender el crecimiento del estudiante, los resultados RIT, e información general sobre las evaluaciones de MAP–por favor contacte a nuestra Asistente de Superintendencia de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje Jeanne Spiller.
