We’re Settling In!
As one would anticipate, our students came to us at the start of the year a little bewildered by the great, big school they were walking into without Mommy or Daddy or a loved one. Of course, we've walked closely with them through every transition, teaching and modeling the routines. This week began our week of assisting kindergarten children to find their own rooms in the morning (as opposed to meeting teachers in the gym). Adults are still lining the halls like a great big parade, supporting all children. The kids did beautifully! Our routines around dismissal are smooth running. Kindergartners have lunch down, knowing how to access the purchased/hot lunch line or retrieve their lunch from home on their own. All children are settling into routines inside and outside of their classrooms and we are so proud of how much they’ve learned in just a little over a week. The best part of every day is seeing the smiles of your children.
Curriculum Night Recap
It was a pleasure seeing so many smiling faces on Curriculum Night, with well over 300 parents joining us. It was a full house, which is just how we like it! Thank you for attending. This is the beginning of our partnership as we work together to have a wonderful year, celebrating the developing love of learning in your child. Bears That Care
At Willow Grove and all District 96 schools, we value the social-emotional learning of children. You may hear your child refer to "Bears That Care." Beginning in the next week or so, each morning after saying the Pledge of Allegiance, we anchor our day in the Bears that Care Pledge. This is our school pledge that emphasizes our core values for how we work and play together every day.
Over the last week, I've been going to each classroom, reading our Bears that Care Pledge story that teaches children our pledge and explains the three character pillars. We know that having a school where we all show kindness, responsibility, and respect will help everyone learn their best and have safe and happy days!
As I’ve gone to each class, I’ve loved sharing a special story with them to welcome all early childhood and kindergarten students to Willow Grove. This beautifully illustrated story celebrates the strength in our diversity. Every classroom has received this book for their classroom library to remind every child how happy we are to have them as part of our school family.
Looking for Volunteers ~ PE & Library
PE Helpers
Calling all parents who want to be gym helpers!! Beginning in September, you will be allowed to volunteer to help out in your child’s PE class once a month! Just e-mail Mrs. O’Gara at [email protected] and let her know you’re interested and what date you’d like to come. Kindergarten children have PE every day and 2-days per week for early childhood, as listed below. She’ll confirm the date if it’s available and if not, she’ll give you other choices. Once you come, you can then sign up for your next date! You may also call her at (847)541-3660 ext. 5854.

Library Helpers
Calling all parents! We love putting many books in the hands of kids to encourage a love of reading. This means a rapid flow of books in and out of our learning center library, and your support to reshelve books is so appreciated! Please email our Ms. Martinez at [email protected] if you would be interested in this opportunity.
Extra Clothing & Donations Accepted
As I'm sure you're aware, the population of our students does tend to have accidents from time to time, given their age. Even if you think your child is well past accidents, spills and the like can happen. All children should have an extra set of clothing in their cubby. Please send spare clothing (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) into school in a bag (Ziploc storage or grocery bag) clearly labeled with your child’s name. The nurse has extra clothes, if needed, but is extremely low on pants. If you have any hand-me-downs your child has grown out of that you wouldn't mind donating, we'd love it! Pants that would fit girls or boys between the ages of 3 to 6 would be wonderful, sizes 4T-7T or youth XS-M.
If your child ever needs to borrow clothing from school, please return it. Your child may send it to the office for our nurse.
MAP Testing Information
As a district, we have made the decision this year to turn off the ability for students to see their RIT score immediately upon submitting their test. In past years, this feature has been turned on. Instead, students will receive their scores through an individual discussion with their teacher at some point following the MAP testing window. In addition, MAP score reports will be emailed to parents on Friday, September 6th beginning at 3 pm.
The main reasons for this decision are as follows:
We believe it is best for students that their results are shared personally. Teachers can help put student results into context and discuss areas for further growth and areas of strength. A RIT score in isolation does not communicate this level of detail and simply becomes a number to compare themselves to others.
Some of our students have demonstrated a high level of anxiety with the level of sharing that occurs when the RIT scores are shown upon test submission. This change will allow students to simply take the assessment and not be concerned about the immediacy of the feedback.
Kindergarten Full-Day Tuition
Families made the first payment during the online registration process and the second payment is not due until October 1st. You will receive an email with all payment details on September 25th and each month when tuition is due. Timely payments are greatly appreciated, as we need to reach out to any family who doesn’t provide payment by the due date. Delinquent payment may result in your child being moved to our half-day kindergarten program, with notification.

The following is repeat information from last week's blog, but still current. You can skip this if you already reviewed last week's message.
Safety Drills
All schools are required to hold fire/evacuation, severe weather, and lockdown drills. We recognize some of the content could potentially be frightening for our little ones if not handled properly and are extremely cautious and developmentally appropriate in our delivery. Our teachers are attentive to our students' emotions throughout their instruction prior to the drills and during drills, are able to access support if needed, and would alert parents if their child seemed scared or under stress. I am unable to provide specific dates of the actual drills to parents, as drills are meant to be at times where the population is unaware and we respond without knowing exactly when it will happen. This is important for us, as adults, and our students, to help us learn to respond without knowing all of the specifics, just as in an emergency. Please know, lockdown drills and fire drills are common around this time of year (fall-ish) and going through the year. Severe weather drills are more often in the winter/spring. Your child's teacher will let you know when there has been instruction or a drill. Please let me know if you have any questions.
¡Nos estamos adaptando!
Tal como se anticipa, nuestros estudiantes llegaron a nosotros al inicio del año escolar un poquito desconcertados por la escuela tan grande a la que entrarán sin Mami o Papi o un ser querido. Por supuesto, hemos caminado junto con ellos a lo largo de cada transición, enseñando y modelado las rutinas. Esta semana se inició con la ayuda a los estudiantes de kindergarten para que encontraran sus salones en la mañana (en lugar de conocer a sus maestros en el gym). Los adultos aún se colocan en los pasillos como si fuera un gran desfile, apoyando a todos los niños. ¡Los niños hicieron un trabajo maravilloso! Nuestras rutinas durante la salida marcha tranquilamente. Ya los estudiantes de kindergarten se saben la rutina del almuerzo, saben acceder a la fila adecuada de almuerzo o van solitos por su almuerzo que trajeron de casa. Todo los niños se están adaptando a las rutinas dentro y fuera de sus salones y estamos tan orgullosos de todo lo que han aprendido en estos días. La mejor parte de todos los días es ver las sonrisas de sus hijos.
Resumen de la Noche Curricular
Fue un gusto ver tantas caras sonrientes durante la Noche Curricular, con más de 300 padres que nos acompañaron. ¡Fue un lleno total, tal como nos gusta! Gracias por asistir. Este es el inicio de la colaboración mientras trabajamos juntos para tener un año maravilloso, celebrando el desarrollo del aprendizaje de su hijo. Osos Cariñosos
En Willow Grove y en todas las escuelas del Distrito 96, valoramos el aprendizaje socio emocional de los niños. Usted podrá escuchar a su hijo decir "Osos Cariñosos." En las próximas semanas, cada mañana después de decir el Juramento a la Bandera, decimos el Juramento de los Osos Cariñosos. Este es el juramento escolar que enfatiza nuestros valores fundamentales de cómo trabajamos y jugamos juntos todos los días.
En esta semana, he visitado cada salón, leyendo el cuento de nuestro Juramento de Osos Cariñosos el cual enseña a los niños nuestro juramento y explica las tres bases de carácter. ¡Sabemos que al tener una escuela donde podemos mostrar amabilidad, responsabilidad, y respeto ayudará a todos a aprender de la mejor manera y tener días seguros y alegres!
Al visitar cada salón, he disfrutado compartir un cuento especial con ellos para darles la bienvenida a todos los estudiantes a Willow Grove. Este cuento especial el cual está ilustrado de manera maravillosa, celebra la solidez de nuestra diversidad. Cada salón ha recibido este libro para recordarle a cada niño que son parte de nuestra familia escolar.

¡¡Llamando a todos los padres que puedan ayudar en la clase de gym!! ¡Empezando en septiembre, usted podrá ser voluntario y ayudar en la clase de Educación Física de su hijo una vez al mes! Voluntarios para la Biblioteca
¡Llamando a todos los padres! Nos encanta ofrecer libros a los niños para fomentar el amor hacia la lectura. ¡Esto quiere decir que hay una gran cantidad de libros que entran y salen de la biblioteca, y se agradecería su ayuda al colocar los libros de nuevo en su estante correspondiente! Por favor envíe un correo a Ms. Martinez al [email protected] si le interesa ayudar.
Se Acepta Ropa y Donaciones
Quizás usted ya sabe que, nuestros estudiantes pueden tener accidentes de vez en cuando, debido a su edad. Aunque usted piense que su hijo ya no tendrá accidentes o derrames. Todos los niños deben tener ropa extra en su cubículo. Por favor envíe ropa extra (pantalones, camisas, ropa interior, calcetines) en una bolsa (Ziploc o bolsa plástica) que indique el nombre de su hijo. La enfermera usa ropa extra, de ser necesario, pero tiene una pequeña cantidad de pantalones. ¡Si usted tiene ropa que ya no le queda a su hijo y no le importaría donarla, sería magnífico! Necesitamos pantalones para niñas o niños entre las edades de 3 a 6, tamaños 4T-7T o youth XS-M.
Si su hijo necesita pedir ropa prestada de la escuela, favor de regresarla. Su hijo la puede regresar en la oficina.
Información sobre la Evaluación MAP
A nivel de distrito, hemos decidido apagar la habilidad de que los estudiantes vean los resultados RIT inmediatamente al presentar su examen. En años anteriores, esta característica ha estado encendida. En su lugar, los estudiantes recibirán sus resultados de manera individual con su maestro después tomar la prueba MAP. Además, los reportes del resultado de MAP serán enviados por correo electrónico a los padres el viernes, 6 de septiembre a empezando a las 3 pm.
Las razones principales para esta decisión son las siguientes:
Creemos que es mejor que compartamos los resultados con los estudiantes personalmente. Los maestros pueden ayudar a los estudiantes poner los resultados en contexto y hablar sobre las áreas en las que necesita crecimiento y las áreas de fortaleza. Un resultado RIT por sí solo no indica este nivel de detalles y simplemente es un número que pueden comparar con los demás.
Algunos de nuestros estudiantes han demostrado un alto nivel de ansiedad cuando comparten los resultados RIT al finalizar la prueba. Este cambio permite que los estudiantes simplemente tomen la prueba y no se preocupen de los comentarios que recibirán dinmediatamente.
Matrícula de Kindergarten de Día Completo
Las familias hicieron su primer pago durante el proceso de inscripción en línea y el segundo pago vence el 1 de octubre. Usted recibirá un correo para el 25 de septiembre con los detalles de los pagos y cada mes que se vence el pago. Agradeceríamos mucho si puede pagar a tiempo, ya que tendríamos que contactar a cada familia que no hace el pago a tiempo. Cualquier pago atrasado puede causar que se cambie su hijo al programa de medio día de kindergarten, con un aviso.

Simulacros de Seguridad
Todas las escuelas requieren practicar un simulacro de incendio/evacuación, climas severos y simulacros de aislamiento de emergencias. Sabemos que cierto contenido puede ser atemorizante para nuestros pequeñines si no se manejan apropiadamente y tenemos mucho cuidado a la hora de impartir este contenido. Nuestros maestros están atentos a las emociones de nuestros estudiantes a lo largo de su enseñanza antes y durante los simulacros, son capaces de conseguir apoyo de ser necesario, y avisar a los padres si ven que su hijo estaba asustado o estresado. No puedo indicarles las fechas específicas de los simulacros a los padres, ya que la intención de los simulacros es la de practicar cuando la población no sabe que va a suceder y nosotros respondemos sin saber cuándo va a suceder. Esto es importante para nosotros, como adultos, y nuestros estudiantes, para aprender a responder sin saber los detalles, tal como sucede durante una emergencia. Por favor tenga en cuenta que, los simulacros de aislamiento de emergencias y los simulacros de incendio son comunes para esta época del año (otoño) y según avanza el año. Los simulacros de climas severos se practican durante la época de invierno/primavera. El maestro de su hijo le dejará saber cuando haya tenido instrucciones sobre un simulacro o cuando haya tenido un simulacro. Por favor déjeme saber si tiene alguna pregunta.
