Superintendent's Message, May 25, 2022

Dear District 96 Community:

As we near the end of the school year and find ourselves amidst celebrations and recognitions, I write to you today in the wake of another  heart-wrenching tragedy.  Our commitment to physical and emotional safety for all students and staff is paramount each and every day.  I felt compelled to share a new resource that school districts in Illinois have access to and to share some resources for parents and teachers on talking with students in the wake of tragedy. Find guidance on how to talk to kids about violence.

A statewide school safety program called Safe2Help Illinois is newly available to all community members. This program offers students a safe and confidential way to share information that may help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence, and other threats to student safety. Safe2Help Illinois features a 24/7 helpline at 1-844-4-SAFEIL, a free mobile app (Google Play | Apple App Store), and a dedicated website (www.Safe2Helpil.com). In addition to Safe2Help.  I encourage you to explore this resource for both you and your student.  In addition, we always encourage you to call 911 when there is an emergency or when you are concerned about a potentially escalating emergency.

Recurring tragedies strengthen our resolve and commitment to the critical importance of teaching and supporting the development of not only academic skills but of the social and emotional skills that each and every one of us needs in order to navigate this complex world.  This coupled with a continued diligence in supporting and intervening when emerging mental health concerns present themselves continues to be of the utmost importance in our schools and communities.

And so, as we continue to participate in the celebrations and milestones associated with the end of the school year, hold your kids close and recommit to a collective partnership with each and every person who impacts the lives of the kids in our community.  And if you see something that causes you concern, use the resources available to express your concern immediately.

Resources:

Regards,
~ Julie Schmidt, District 96 School Superintendent
