Superintendent's Message, 10.30.2021

District 96 Community,

Vaccination Clinic Information

Last week, we asked you to indicate whether you would be interested in scheduling a Covid-19 vaccination appointment for your 5-11 year-old-child(ren) through a vaccination clinic hosted in District 96.  The purpose of the survey was to gauge level of interest and to provide information to the Passport Health medical professionals who will be providing the service in order to plan staffing and supply. If you are not interested in a vaccination appointment for your student, you may disregard this message.

Approximately 2,000 students ages 5-11 attend District 96 schools.  Parents expressed interest in making appointments for 1,612 students.  Thus, we have secured vaccination clinic dates with Passport Health, and you will find that information below. These dates and times are pending authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommendation by CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on or about November 3, 2021.

Transportation:  Bus Stop Requests

As you know, there continues to be a national shortage of drivers, and this has led us to take numerous actions, including the voluntary transportation opt-out and rerouting of First Student busses.  Schools provide this public transportation service using community stops that may or may not change from year-to-year and may be rerouted for efficiency when necessary.

Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/29-3) indicates that school districts must establish bus stops for eligible students at a point located not more than 1 ½ miles from the exit of the property of each pupil and that the school district is NOT required to provide door-to-door service.  We have and continue to provide community bus stops that are much, much closer than required because it is the right thing to do.

However, due to the ongoing challenges transportation companies face, we cannot make bus stop changes for convenience purposes.  We understand that a prior bus stop may have been located very close to your driveway and that that may not be the case anymore.  As an example, a student walking 400 feet to a community stop is not unreasonable and is, in fact, very typical.  In addition, we are committed to treating all District 96 residents equally, and thus, we will apply the current inability to accept convenience change requests to everyone.  We appreciate your partnership.

  Sincerely,

~ Julie Schmidt, District 96 Superintendent of Schools
