KCSD’s next leader:

A proven professional who leads with the head and heart

Parents and KCSD community: You’ve spoken.

In your next schools chief, you’re looking for someone who leads with both the head and the heart and possesses a deep knowledge of the best practices in teaching and learning.

  • Someone who is student-centered, innovative, confident, resilient.
  • Hardworking. Proactive. Transparent. Visionary. Strategic.
  • Possesses a genuine warm, caring, personable, transparent, flexible and approachable personality, and is skilled at building trust and maintaining a positive culture and climate.

These are just a handful of the characteristics you ~ KCSD parents, teachers and support staff, administrators, business and community leaders and other constituents ~ collectively identified as desired skills and characteristics for our next district leader.

School Exec Connect and New Superintendent ProfileThe District’s Superintendent search consultants, School Exec Connect, shared this information with our Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday night.  They culled the profile from the combination of an online survey and a series of Focus Groups and Public Forums for parents, staff and other stakeholders and others hosted in September and early October.  (The survey alone generated more than 550 responses.)

The new Schools Chief will succeed Julie Schmidt, the District’s Superintendent for the past 11 years.  Supt. Schmidt will relinquish the seat at the end of June and her successor is expected to begin work on July 1, 2022. Mrs. Schmidt will continue to support and mentor her successor into the 2022-2023 school year.

"I want to recognize the huge loss that Mrs. Schmidt’s retirement will bring to the district," Marc Tepper, the president of the Board of Education, said.  "I also want to recognize that more than 500 people were involved in this process to develop the new leadership traits and the board is very excited ... by what our consultants were able to glean from all of those interviews.  We’re going to let the process play out, and we look forward to interviewing some excellent candidates in the next couple of months."

The search consultants will use the Superintendent Leadership Profile as they screen and conduct interviews with candidates, they told the Board at Tuesday’s meeting.  They may use these findings to develop questions to ask the candidates and help them and others learn about KCSD 96.

The consultants also talked about the new superintendent’s priorities in the first year, which included the creation of a transition plan.

The KCSD 96 Board of Education will meet the top candidates in November and plans to identify the next superintendent at its Dec. 14 meeting.
