In Our Schools

3-D CITY

Students in Mrs. Spivak’s Explorations class are building a 3D city, using models they designed and crafted with a 3D printer.  They are coloring, then claiming a ‘piece’ of property on which to place their designed building.

Girls in STEM

Last weekend, several dozen middle school girls got a glimpse into several science and technological, engineering and math fields at the Lake County STEM for Girls event. The event was hosted at Woodlawn Middle School.

There, they got glimpses into science and technology fields, learning how to use a small bulb and battery to create an origami frog that could jump; extrapolating DNA from a banana and using candy to create a DNA model; learning how medical doctors assess and treat patients and listening to normal and abnormal breathing and heartbeats; creating slime that glows; meeting animals like a tegu lizard and a Madagascar hissing cockroach; learning about the Python machine system and how it helps computers and systems access images and information; exploring chlorophyll in mint plants; using a finite selection of materials to design a waterproof, flotation device to hold up the most weight (the most was 84 quarters).
