Twin Groves 8th grader Riddhi Mallela and her SHS freshman brother Maanas earned top honors in the Illinois Sixth Congressional District Congressional App Challenge. The siblings’ app–called Take Me Places–helps senior citizens find transportation to events. This year more than 10,000 students registered for the challenge nationally and submitted 2,177 functioning apps.
Inspiration for their app came from real-life experience: “We've seen our grandparents unable to attend events during the daytime, and thought of an idea to help them move around freely.”
The Congressional App Challenge is an initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, sponsoring contests in districts to encourage middle and high-school students to learn to code and inspiring them to consider computer science careers. Rep. Sean Casten named the Mallela siblings the winner in the Illinois 6th District.
