iPad Handbook
Kildeer Countryside School District 96 aims to maximize all students' learning potential to prepare them for a successful future. To achieve this end, Kildeer Countryside School District 96 provides each student with an iPad.
By providing each student with an iPad, students possess the tools and resources to be successful in today's society. Excellence in education requires integrated technology throughout our educational program. Increasing access to technology via the student iPad is essential for students of today and future students. The individual use of iPads is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for college and the workplace.
Continuous dynamic interaction among students, educators, parents, and the extended community has been shown to increase student learning. Technology immersion is crucial to maintain the vital role of the teacher. On the contrary, it transforms the teacher from a director of learning to a facilitator of learning. Effective teaching and learning with iPads integrates technology into the curriculum at any time, any place. Kildeer Countryside School District 96 believes that the use of 1:1 devices will aid in developing independent, self-initiated learners, provide for collaboration and communication between students and teachers, and extend student learning beyond the classroom.
The policies, procedures, and guidelines outlined in this Handbook apply to all iPads Kildeer Countryside School District 96 students use. Additional requirements are at the discretion of each classroom teacher.

iPad Damage Policy/Repairing or Replacing iPad
Apple Warranty
- Apple warrants the iPads from defects in materials and workmanship for one year after purchase. This limited warranty covers normal use, mechanical breakdown, or faulty construction and will provide replacement parts necessary to repair the iPad or replace it.
- If iPad misuse and abuse become a habitual problem, an administrative decision will be made regarding the student's further take-home privileges.
Insurance Coverage
- The annual technology fee paid as part of registration will pay for the initial iPad case, charging cable, power brick, pencil, apps, and self-insurance for the school-issued iPad for repair and replacement in the event of theft, loss, or accidental damage.
- All repair/replacement claims must be reported to the homeroom teacher as soon as possible so that the iPad can be repaired by the KCSD 96 Technology Department.
- This plan covers any two incidents of loss or accidental damage to the accessories as a group (case, charger, and USB charging cable) and two incidents of loss or accidental damage to the iPad itself, with one covered incident for the pencil. It does not cover intentional damage to the iPad or accessories. Students and parents may be responsible for the full cost of repair and/or replacement of an intentionally damaged iPad, case, pencil, charger, or USB charging cable. If a student exhausts both covered accidental incidents per group, further accidental damage will also be charged at the full cost of repair and/or replacement.
| Group | Accidental Damage/Loss Incidents | Intentional Damage Incidents |
| Case/Charger/Cable | 2 | 0 |
| iPad | 2 | 0 |
| Pencil | 1 | o |
Reporting Theft or Vandalism
In the event of a fire, acts of God, theft, or vandalism, the student and the student’s parents/guardians must report the incident immediately to the homeroom teacher and principal, who will notify the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Technology Department. If procedures fail to locate a presumed stolen device on District property, it is mandatory that a police report immediately be filed by the parents and student and a copy of the report be provided to the principal. No consideration of a replacement device will be determined until these steps are followed.
Fraudulent reporting of theft will be turned over to law enforcement officials for prosecution. A student making a false report will also be subject to school disciplinary action.
The District may work with law enforcement agencies to be aware of this District-owned equipment.
Loss/Replacement of iPads
If a student loses or destroys the school-issued iPad, an administrative decision will determine whether the student will be issued a loaner iPad (if available), whether home privileges will be continued or denied, or whether the student must complete assignments using alternative methods for the rest of the school year without an iPad.
Mobile Device Specifications
Issuing of iPads
Students will receive new iPads either during the summer or at the beginning of the school year, provided that the District receives an electronic signature on the annual registration form from a parent/guardian for the student user.
If a student leaves Kildeer Countryside School District 96 during the academic year, they must return the iPad at that point. Failure to return the iPad by the conclusion of the school year or upon leaving enrollment at Kildeer Countryside School District 96 will result in the student being held accountable for the expenses until the iPad is returned or the replacement cost of the iPad is covered.
Taking Care of the iPad
The student is responsible for the care of the iPad he or she has been issued by the District. iPads that are broken or are not working properly must be reported to a teacher and taken to the school Technology Lab or Learning Center for evaluation of the device. A student should never try to repair the iPad or have someone outside the District work on it, as this could void the warranty and cause the student to be without an iPad for an undetermined length of time.
General Precautions
- No food or drink is allowed near the iPad.
- Charger cords/cables/ear buds must be inserted into and removed from the iPad carefully to prevent damage.
- iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, etching, stickers, or labels that are not the property of KCSD96.
- iPads must never be left unsupervised ANYWHERE, including unlocked lockers, vehicles, the cafeteria, the gym, or anywhere on the school grounds.
- Students are responsible for keeping iPad batteries charged daily for school use.
- Students must honor and abide by all KCSD96 policies, rules, and guidelines.
- Do not put the iPad on top of a stack of books or papers, as it can slide off and be damaged.
Carrying the iPad
The protective Kildeer Countryside School District 96-issued case provides the iPad with sufficient padding to protect it from normal treatment and provides a suitable means for carrying the device within the school and to and from school daily.
These guidelines should be followed:
- NEVER remove the protective Kildeer Countryside School District 96-issued iPad case. Only Kildeer Countryside School District 96 cases are allowed on the school-issued iPads.
- iPads should be placed carefully inside backpacks when carried to and from school. iPads should not be placed under or between books, as this puts too much pressure and weight on the iPad screen
Screen Care
While made of durable glass, iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure and impact on the display. Please adhere to the following rules:
- Do not lean on top of the iPad.
- Do not place anything on or beside the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.
- Clean the screen with a soft dry cloth or anti-static cloth only. Do not use liquid (including Windex) to clean the screen.
- Do not "bump" the iPad against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc., as it can damage the screen.
- Use caution: iPad screens can be scratched by rough or sharp objects like keys and rocks.
iPad Identification
Each school-owned iPad is labeled in the manner specified by the school. Labels are NOT to be intentionally removed from the iPads. iPads can be identified in the following ways:
- Serial number
- Kildeer Countryside School Distrit 96 label
Storing the iPad
When students are not using iPads, the devices should be stored:
- in a locked room
- in a secure locker
- in a teacher's locked classroom, or
- in a secure designated location at home or school.
iPads should never be left in a vehicle (locked or unlocked). Not only can temperature change cause damage, cars are also popular targets for thieves.
iPads Left in Unsupervised Locations
Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include:
- school building and grounds
- cafeteria
- hallways
- Learning Center
- Gym
- dressing rooms
- Technology Labs
- restrooms
- any unlocked classroom
Any iPad left unattended is in danger of being stolen. If an iPad is found in an unsupervised area, it must be taken to the School Office. The student responsible may be subject to disciplinary action.
Managing Files and Saving Work
Each student is advised to store their work from the iPad in a cloud storage account. The available options within the District for cloud storage include but are not restricted to, platforms like Schoology, iCloud, SeeSaw, and Google Drive. If students have email access, they may also email documents to themselves. Students will have access to 200 GB of iCloud storage, where students will be able to back up data. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.
Apps and Updating
Apps
All apps installed by Kildeer Countryside School District 96 must remain on the iPad in usable condition and be easily accessible. Occasionally, the District may remove or add apps for use in a particular class. Additional apps may be pushed to the iPads through the mobile device management system. Students are not allowed to sync the school-issued iPad to a home computer.
Updating Apps
The student is expected and required to update apps and the iOS installed on the iPad if/when prompted.
Inspection
Restoring the iPad
Occasionally, it may be necessary for the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Technology Department to restore an iPad. It may be required to repair software or hardware issues or to remove inappropriate content from a device. A student should never attempt to do this independently unless instructed as a troubleshooting step.

Email and Chat Rooms
- When required by the teacher, the student's email accounts will be used on a limited basis.
- Chat and messaging services provided within Google Apps or other web-based programs allow for collaboration and communication among peers in a safe, filtered environment.
- Chat and messaging services and email will be used only as part of the instructional curriculum and must be supervised by the teacher.
- When using email and messaging services, be aware that emails and documents on District-owned equipment are part of the public domain, not private, and are subject to inspection at any time.

- The student in whose name a device is issued will be responsible at all times for its appropriate use, even if someone else uses the student's device to break the rules.
- If a student's device contains an app that falls in the unapproved app category, it will have restrictions automatically applied. If this happens, the student may contact a coach or teacher for help.
- Non-compliance with the policies of the iPad Handbook and the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Acceptable Use/Internet Safety Policy will result in disciplinary action.

Logitech Crayon (Pencil) Replacement Policy - IMPORTANT NEW POLICY Effective 2026-2027 School Year
Due to the significant administrative and financial cost associated with replacing lost or broken proprietary devices, the District is updating its policy regarding the Logitech Crayon.
Initial Issuance: One (1) Logitech Crayon will be issued to the student as a one-time provision upon their initial participation in the KCSD 96 1:1 iPad Program. This initial device is provided at no additional cost.
Replacement Responsibility: Parents/Guardians are responsible for the full cost of replacing any subsequent lost, broken, or damaged Crayon.
Replacement Cost: The cost to replace a subsequently lost, broken, or intentionally damaged District-issued Logitech Crayon is Fifty Dollars ($50.00), or the current cost of the device, whichever is less.
Stylus Alternatives and Support: While students will receive a Logitech Crayon upon initial issuance, families may choose to purchase a comparable third-party stylus for use with the school-issued iPad. Please note that after the initial issuance, District 96 will not service, repair, or replace the Logitech Crayon or any personal third-party stylus. This includes, but is not limited to, providing technical support for any connectivity or app-related issues that arise from using a non-District-issued stylus. The maintenance and replacement of these accessories are the sole responsibility of the family.
Stylus Possession and Withdrawal: The Logitech Crayon (initial issuance) or any family-purchased third-party stylus is considered the property of the student/family after initial issuance and does not need to be returned to the District upon annual collection, service collection, or student withdrawal. The District will not collect or inventory the Logitech Crayons or other styluses.
Reporting Theft or Vandalism
In the event of a fire, acts of God, theft, or vandalism, the student and the student’s parents/guardians must report the incident immediately to the homeroom teacher and principal, who will notify the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Technology Department. If our procedures do not lead to locating a presumed stolen device on District property, we ask that parents and the student file a police report and provide a copy to the principal. A replacement device can be considered once these steps are completed.
The principal, in collaboration with the KCSD 96 Technology Department, will review the situation to determine whether the report appears accurate. We trust that all reports of theft are made in good faith, and we appreciate the partnership of our families in maintaining a safe learning community. In the rare event that a report is found to be intentionally false, the matter may be referred to law enforcement for further investigation and appropriate follow-up. A student making a false report will also be subject to disciplinary action by the school. The District may work with law enforcement agencies to ensure awareness of District-owned equipment.
All administrative decisions regarding the continuation or denial of home privileges will be made in accordance with the due process procedures outlined in the KCSD 96 Student Code of Conduct.
Mobile Device Specifications
The mobile device selected for use is an Apple iPad (Wi-Fi only).
Issuing of iPads
Students will receive iPads on their first day of school or at another time designated by the school district provided that the District receives an electronic signature on the annual registration form from a parent/guardian for the student user. If a student leaves Kildeer Countryside School District 96 during the academic year, they must return the iPad at that point. Failure to return the iPad by the end of the school year or upon leaving the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 will result in the student being held accountable for the expenses until the iPad is returned or the replacement cost of the iPad is covered.
Taking Care of the iPad
The student is responsible for the care of the iPad that they have been issued by the District. If an iPad is broken or not working properly, the student or a staff member must submit a technology support ticket. Additionally, students may utilize the building's instructional technology support staff for assistance, if available. Parents may also contact support at elearningsupport@d96.zendesk.com to request support for their child's technology.
A student should never attempt to repair the iPad or have someone outside the District work on it, as this could void the warranty and result in the student being without an iPad for an undetermined length of time.
General Precautions
No food or drink is allowed near the iPad. Charger cords/cables/ear buds must be inserted into and removed from the iPad carefully to prevent damage. iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, etching, stickers, or labels that are not the property of KCSD96. iPads must never be left unsupervised anywhere, including unlocked lockers, vehicles, the cafeteria, the gym, or any other area on school grounds. Students are responsible for keeping iPad batteries charged daily for school use. Students must honor and abide by all KCSD96 rules and guidelines. Do not place the iPad on top of a stack of books or papers, as it may slide off and become damaged.
Carrying the iPad
The protective case issued by Kildeer Countryside School District 96 provides the iPad with sufficient padding to protect it from normal wear and tear, and offers a suitable means for carrying the device within the school and to and from school daily. These guidelines should be followed: NEVER remove the protective Kildeer Countryside School District 96-issued iPad case. Only Kildeer Countryside School District 96 cases are allowed on the school-issued iPads. iPads should be placed carefully inside backpacks when carried to and from school. iPads should not be placed under or between books, as this puts too much pressure and weight on the iPad screen
Screen Care
While made of durable glass, iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure and impact on the display. Please adhere to the following rules: Do not lean on top of the iPad. Do not place anything on or beside the iPad that could put pressure on the screen. Clean the screen with a soft dry cloth or anti-static cloth only. Do not use liquid (including Windex) to clean the screen. Do not "bump" the iPad against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc., as it can damage the screen. Use caution: iPad screens can be scratched by rough or sharp objects like keys and rocks.
iPad Identification
Each school-owned iPad is labeled according to the district's specifications. Labels are NOT to be intentionally removed from the iPads. iPads can be identified in the following ways: by their serial number and/or Kildeer Countryside School District 96 label
Storing the iPad
When students are not using iPads, the devices should be stored in a locked room, a secure locker, a teacher's locked classroom, or in a designated secure location at home or school. iPads should never be left in a vehicle (locked or unlocked). Not only can temperature change cause damage, but cars are also popular targets for thieves.
iPads Left in Unsupervised Locations
Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include: school building and grounds, cafeterias, hallways, Learning Center, Gym, dressing rooms, Technology Labs, restrooms, any unlocked classroom.
The available options within the District for cloud storage include, but are not restricted to, platforms like iCloud, SeeSaw, and Google Drive. If students have email access, they may also email documents to themselves. Students will have access to 200 GB of iCloud storage, where students will be able to back up data. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.
Apps and Updating Apps
All apps installed by Kildeer Countryside School District 96 must remain on the iPad in usable condition and be easily accessible. Occasionally, the District may remove or add apps for use in a particular class. Additional apps may be pushed to the iPads through the mobile device management system. Students are not allowed to sync the school-issued iPad to a home computer.
Updating Apps
The student is expected and required to update apps and the iOS installed on the iPad if/when prompted.
Inspection
The District reserves the right to inspect iPads for restricted content and settings and overall care and condition of the iPad and case. A student has no right to privacy on a Kildeer Countryside School District 96 iPad.
Restoring the iPad
Occasionally, it may be necessary for the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Technology Department to restore an iPad. It may be required to repair software or hardware issues or to remove inappropriate content from a device. A student should never attempt to do this independently unless instructed as a troubleshooting step.
iPad Acceptable Use
All KCSD 96 staff and students are required to comply with the KCSD 96 Acceptable Use/Internet Safety Policy, including specific guidelines for iPad use. Access to KCSD 96 technology resources is a privilege, not a right.
General Guidelines
The student will have access to all available forms of electronic media and communication that support the educational goals and objectives of KCSD 96. The student will use the device for educational purposes. Each student is responsible for their own ethical and educational use of technology resources. Transmission of any material that is in violation of any federal or state law is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, confidential information, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, and malware. Any attempt to alter data, the configuration of a device, or the files of another user without the consent of the individual, school administrator, or technology administrator will be considered an act of vandalism and subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Cyberbullying will not be tolerated, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken immediately by the school administrator. The iPad will be configured with a web filter to comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and District policies. Any attempt to bypass or circumvent the filter may result in disciplinary action. The equipment (iPad, charger, USB cable, and case) must be returned if a student leaves, withdraws, is expelled, or is reassigned to an alternative school from KCSD's 96 schools prior to the end of the school year. The district may also collect student iPads during the final week of the academic year if deemed necessary.
Privacy and Safety
The student should not open, use, or modify device files that do not belong to them. The student should not reveal their full name, phone number, home address, social security number, credit card numbers, passwords, or the passwords of other people. Remember that the information stored on a student's device is not guaranteed to be private or confidential. If a student intentionally or inadvertently accesses a website that contains obscene, pornographic, or otherwise offensive material, the student must notify a teacher or an administrator immediately so that such sites can be blocked. This is not a request–it is a responsibility. Student use of the internet on the school's network is filtered in accordance with local procedures, as required by state and federal mandates.
Legal Propriety
The student should comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. Ignorance of the law is not immunity. If a student is unsure, they should ask a teacher, parent, or School Resource Officer. Plagiarism is the act of claiming someone else's work as one's own. It is an unacceptable practice. Give credit to all sources used, whether quoted or summarized. This includes all forms of media on the Internet, such as graphics, movies, music, and text. Using or possessing hacking software is strictly prohibited, and violators will be subject to severe disciplinary penalties, including violation of applicable state or federal law, such as the Illinois Penal Code, Title 7. Offenses Against Property; Chapter 33, Computer Crimes–will result in criminal prosecution and/or disciplinary action by the District. Use or possession of any software (e.g., SSH, RDP, VNC, VPN) used to circumvent the District's security systems, firewalls, or content filters is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action by the District.
Email and Chat Rooms
When required by the teacher, the student's email accounts will be used on a limited basis. Chat and messaging services provided within Google Apps or other web-based programs enable collaboration and communication among peers in a secure, filtered environment. Chat and messaging services, as well as email, will be used only as part of the instructional curriculum and must be supervised by the teacher. When using email and messaging services, be aware that emails and documents stored on District-owned equipment are part of the public domain and are subject to inspection at any time. Always use appropriate language in email and messaging services. Follow Netiquette Rules, which include being polite, respectful, and exhibiting effective behavior when communicating online. Do not transmit language/material that is profane, obscene, abusive, or offensive to others. Do not send mass emails, chain letters, or spam. Maintain high integrity regarding email content. Report any inappropriate behavior or violation of these rules to a teacher or administrator immediately.
Consequences
The student in whose name a device is issued will be responsible at all times for its appropriate use, even if someone else uses the student's device to break the rules. If a student's device contains an app that falls into the unapproved app category, it will automatically have restrictions applied. If this happens, the student may contact staff for help. Non-compliance with the guidance of the iPad Handbook and the Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Acceptable Use/Internet Safety Policy will result in disciplinary action. Electronic mail, network usage, and all stored files shall not be considered confidential. It may be monitored at any time by a designated Kildeer Countryside School District 96 staff member to ensure appropriate use. The District cooperates fully with local, state, or federal officials in any investigation concerning or relating to violations of laws.
