Advancing Innovation through STEM

Igniting Student Creativity

KCSD96 is advancing innovation through a strong STEM focus. In fall 2024, Twin Groves Middle School unveiled its new Collaboratory—an interactive learning space featuring a makerspace, noisy lab with 3D printers, and recording studios. A second KCSD96 Collaboratory is under construction at Woodlawn Middle School and will open in fall 2025. Students use this space in a variety of ways during the school day across all content areas.  You might see students creating bridges, organic art, recording podcasts, and more.

"Our vision at KCSD96 is to be the premier elementary school district by laying a strong, lasting foundation for our students as they move into high school and beyond," said Board of Education President Mike Burns.

KCSD96 is forging an innovative future—one powered by innovation, learning, and sustainability.

Makerspace

The Makerspace at Twin Groves Middle School is a dynamic, hands-on learning environment designed to foster creativity, innovation, and collaboration among students. This space includes materials that support a wide range of STEM and design-based projects.

Students at Twin Groves utilize the Makerspace for activities such as building custom buttons and constructing bridges capable of supporting significant weight, integrating practical applications into their science and engineering curricula. The space encourages students to engage in problem-solving and critical thinking, providing them with opportunities to design, prototype, and test their ideas in a supportive setting.

Noisy Lab

The Noisy Lab is a dynamic, hands-on learning space equipped with STEM-related tools, including 3D printers. Designed to promote engaging, experiential learning experiences, the Noisy Lab encourages students to explore, create, and innovate through various projects and activities.

This space complements other creative environments within the district by providing students with opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary learning that fosters problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. The Noisy Lab serves as a hub for students to apply their knowledge in practical ways, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications.
