Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/25/18

This was the last day of school for our 8th graders!  They were treated to a wonderful breakfast, DJ and snow cones on this warm May morning. Thank you to all of our 8th grade families, I really like this group and have enjoyed your students. Great young men and women. I am looking forward to graduation this weekend.

Graduation

We have the late graduation this year.  The ceremony begins at 8p.m. in the Stevenson High School field house.  Please arrive between 7:15-7:30p.m. I am a firm believer that a graduation is a dignified ceremony and I want people to respect others by not shouting out for their graduate.  Be respectful of those around you and let’s show why Woodlawn is a great school.

Parents

If your student takes medicine at school, you need to come by before the end of the school year to pick it up. We will not be sending home any medicine with your child.

From Tammy Cornwell our School Counselor

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As many of you may know, Thirteen Reasons Why released its second season on Friday, May 18. I  wanted to pass on helpful information surrounding the sensitive topics expected to be re-introduced in season 2 (suicide, depression, sexual assault, threat of school violence, substance abuse). I know there will be multiple arenas that families will fall under:  not watching it at all, watching it with your child, or allowing children to watch on their own. Talking about these sensitive topics does not increase the likelihood that children will participate in harmful acts. Rather, discussing these topics gives them knowledge to better understand and deal with tough situations, and even help their friends. Links are included below to discussion topics and more information about the show itself. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or if you have a concern about your child.

Resources for Parents, Educators and Teens

  • "13 Reasons Why" Resource Center from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Providing information on common risk factors and warning signs; that the best way to talk to someone you’re concerned about; strategies for having a conversation with those who are struggling; and how to connect them to help.
  • 13 Reasons Why Toolkit from Suicide Awareness Voices and Education (SAVE), supported by nearly two dozen mental health organizations, including APA. Provides resources for youth/peers, families, educators and professionals to address the specific topics raised in the episodes.
  • "13 Reasons Why" discussion guide and resources. Not sure where to start? Here is a guide for you and your family on how to discuss the difficult topics and important things to consider if you are planning to re-watch season one.
  • APA Blog: 13 Mental Health Questions about “13 Reasons Why,” addresses issues of warning signs of suicidal behavior, how to help a friend, why people self-harm, and more.

iPad Policy Change for 2018-19

There is a district wide change in our damaged iPad policy heading into next year.  You have been getting updates from most of the year related to broken iPads at Woodlawn.  Here is the statement going to all schools for next year.

The end of the year is a busy time for everyone, but it's always good to get a head start and thinking next year. The policy concerning iPad damage will be different next year. This change is reflected on the flyer below and in greater detail in the 2018-19 Student Handbook. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Required Summer Reading

School District 96 recognizes that summer reading is critically important for a student's continued academic growth.

Students entering Grade 6 or 7 or 8 in the 2018–19 school year have a required summer reading assignment that is due on the first day of school.

Please read this PARENT LETTER for more info.

Your student must read at least ONE BOOK from The Power of One SUMMER READING LIST.

CLICK HERE ON THIS LINK (CLICK HERE FOR SPANISH) for details of the Middle School Summer Reading Assignment and the Parental Acknowledgment Form, to be signed by the student and his or her parent or guardian.

Please contact me with any questions.

Finally, I hope that you enjoyed the Woodlawn Blog this year. I try to make it informative and fun. I believe that gaining a little insight into the person the school district entrusts to do what is best for students, especially your student, is critically important. Those of you who are returning, look for more stories and those parents who are moving on to high school, you can check in on the Woodlawn Principal’s Blog any time you want. As always, thank you for your support.

For those of you who have been following my tag game, I still haven’t been tagged, but had a scare on Saturday. While cutting my lawn, one of my buddies just happened to drive down my street. I went into family lockdown mode. After a 5 hours delay, I returned to cutting the lawn. 6 more days of looking over my shoulder.

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!
