Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/6/18

We are back from break and ready to finish the year strong here at Woodlawn.  It is amazing to see how much the students have grown physically & emotionally throughout the school year.  I am looking forward to a great last 8 weeks of the school year. I am hoping that the weather will give us a break at some point as well.

Congratulations to Meghan Bird

She is going to be a great principal at Country Meadows next year!  We will miss her here at Woodlawn but it is time for her to fly. (Haha)  BTW- on the day she was named principal, she had an emergency apendectomy.  She is at home recovering and doing well.  [email protected]

DuFour Award

It is almost here! Learn about Woodlawn as a Professional Learning Community and live our DuFour Award celebration this coming Wednesday, April 11th at 7p.m.  Mrs. Bird and I will present a brief overview of what it means to be a PLC and how other many other districts around the globe follow this model. You may want to carpool because we only have  a couple hundred parking spots here. (Who am I kidding? You are going to park wherever you want anyways.) Remember that there will be yummy cake and refreshments.

STAND STRONG event at Woodlawn

Is it a vape pen or a flash drive?  Come to Woodlawn on April 26th at 7p.m. and find out.

Filtering Facts from Myths on Vaping, Juuling & E-Cigarettes

Dr. Susan Sirota, Pediatric Partners

Asst. Professor in Clinical Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Chair of Stand Strong’s Marijuana Committee

Our kids know about vaping from their peers and they see it on social media. It’s time for us to catch up. Dr. Sirota will “clear the vapor” by sharing her expertise about:

  • Vaping & e-cigarette products

  • What teens are using & how

  • Are these products dangerous

  • How these products are used for both nicotine & marijuana

Finally, Sergio Garcia at the Masters golf tournament, the same tournament he won last year, shot a 13 on one hole.  As a golfer, I am what is known as a hack. Consistently shooting over 100, I can never put together any of the three parts of my game.  My drives are always off the fairway, my short game is terrible and I cannot putt. Hence, I am not a professional golfer. As a principal, I am far from perfect.  I wonder though, what would my 8 over par on one hole day look like at work? There have been rough days here at Woodlawn for a variety of reasons but seriously, what would my 13 on one hole day look like?  Let me give this a try:

  • Begin the day by sleeping through my alarm

  • Get a ticket from the Lake County Sheriff as I pull into the Woodlawn parking lot

  • Have a parent drive wildly in the parking lot and almost clip me as a walk in toward the building while it is raining

  • Be met by a group of angry parents as I enter the building

  • Have a nauseous student lose it on my shoes

  • Forget I have a meeting with my boss at her office

  • Be informed that a whole bunch of pizza was delivered to my school in 3 separate situations

And just for good measure….

  • Tell my wife that husbands in the 1950’s had it made because they were adored by their wives after reading an article at work

That would be my 8 over par on one hole day.  Just to be honest with everyone, all of these things have happened to me except the ticket.  I was given a warning. I still hear about the 1950’s comment from time to time. I thought it was funny.  Sergio, I feel your pain.
