Woodlawn Principal's Blog 12/8/17

We had a really nice week here at Woodlawn. Things are running smoothly and we are continuing to make progress toward as we head toward Winter Break. Our students are doing well, working hard in the classroom and meeting the expectations of this challenging curriculum.

Dessert Day Snafu

There was a slight problem with our dessert day order so we are moving it Wednesday, December 20th. No need to worry, everything will be taken care of and the students who were supposed to receive a tasty treat today, will receive them on December 20th. As a bonus, every child had the opportunity to receive a popsicle today if they wanted one, free of charge. Thanks PTO!!

District Protocol Regarding Head Lice

Please SEE INFO on our District website regarding the District's protocol for notifying parents of a case of head lice in their student's classroom, as well as a resource and checklist for treatment.

That was a message from our district. No, there is not a head lice problem at Woodlawn. Just so you know, if there were, I would be on it. Having been a principal for 15 years, I don’t want to brag, but I am a four star EXPERT at tracking down these critters that feast on the craniums of our young.  I know how head lice think and where they hide. Personally, I didn’t have to deal with head lice until my youngest came down with a case when she was about 10 years old. It got real at that point. No prisoners. I have to stop talking about this because my head is itching as I type.

Code Fusion at SHS- an opportunity for 8th Grade Students

CodeFusion is a two hour opportunity for students to have an introduction and exploration in the fields of computer programming, engineering, robotics, game development and web design. As more and more of our everyday activities become automated and computerized, these disciplines represent an essential working literacy for our current generation of students. As such, every student should have the opportunity to experience and engage in these fields. CodeFusion was designed to introduce students to a variety of computing and engineering experiences and to encourage them to consider pursuing these fields through high school and beyond. In addition, the program offers 8th grade students a unique opportunity to see inside Stevenson and gives them the chance to interact with teachers and current SHS students.

Finally, I need you to bear with me on this one. I enjoy driving and for the most part, consider myself to be a calm, peaceful driver. There is one thing that happens out on the roads that absolutely makes me crazy...people not letting you merge. I am going to make a statement here. In no way am I trying to gain some type of tactical driving advantage by putting on my turn signal and attempting to get a one car length further than the person behind me. Now I do admit that on occasion, I do speed a little bit, but within a 5 mile radius of Woodlawn, I am on my very best driving behavior. Many years ago, when talking with a Woodlawn parent, I mentioned that I was a calm driver.  She caught me off guard when she said, “Not me,  driving is where I get my aggression out!”. I do not adhere to that theory, in my world, calm is good.  Sure, there are times when I am thinking about life and I should merge quicker, but I wind up merging late, clearly to the dismay of another driver. In no way is this a personal attack on that driver, any member of their family or friends, it is just me enjoying some Meghan Trainor and not paying attention to the yellow, you need to merge sign. If I had the energy, I would start a nationwide, let’s all merge together peacefully movement. I have some ideas for this and would start a non-profit organization, but where would I find the time? Instead, I am asking anyone who reads this to think about my words today, stop pretending like you don’t see the car trying to get in front of you and just let them merge. It will make a more positive driving experience for all of us.
