Please make sure everything is new and unwrapped. The Community Service Club will collect all the gifts and deliver them to a children's hospital. Elyssa’s Mission® provides resources to help prevent teen suicide. The community-based organization was founded in 2006 in honor of Elyssa, a bright, gifted and outgoing Chicagoland girl who bravely battled post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Elyssa’s Mission provides hands-on support to area public and private schools and community organizations in order to educate students, staff and parents on how to recognize and assist those teens most at-risk. Elyssa’s Mission fully funds and implements the evidence-based SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program in over 130 middle and high schools in Illinois. Finally, I, like the rest of you have had a very hard time the last couple of weeks trying to accept what happened to Rachel.  Although I do not live in this area, I believe that I am a part of this community and I truly enjoy the families that have come through Woodlawn.  As a community, we all work together, keeping every child at the center of our focus and celebrating our successes as we go through each school year.  From my position as principal of our school, I try to convey the pulse or heartbeat that is Woodlawn to the families, through this blog.  We were prepared on Monday to have the students return from the Thanksgiving week, providing additional support in the form of social workers, counselors, school psychologists from around the district, plus outside agencies to assist our children.  Although much quieter at school this week, all things considered, I believe that our students handled this tragedy as well as possible. Parents, the professionals at Woodlawn will continue to be available if you or they think that some assistance is in order.  Even if you are unsure if your child could use someone to talk to or not, I encourage you to call the school and talk to one of our professionals.

Rachel was an amazing young lady.  Her teachers talked of how she lit up a room with her energy and how she was respectful and caring to everyone.  The students also felt this from Rachel and have taken it upon themselves to create a loving memorial at her locker.  Our Woodlawn students have brought flowers, written beautiful notes and just stopped at her locker  to remember what a special person Rachel was to all of us.  Personally, I have had no words for the depth of my sorrow, but luckily, our students have been able to remember this shining star of a young lady through their writing.
