Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/27/17

The last Friday in October!  Time is moving along quickly and November always seems to be the fastest month of the school year.  The Fall Party was an absolute blast last night!  Our students danced, played games, ate pizza and had the coolest haunted room ever!  Thank you to all of our PTO volunteers who spent countless hours working on this amazing event.

Woodlawn Newspaper Club

Here it is!  The first ever issue of the new Woodlawn newspaper.  This is an online newspaper here Ms. Gordon and her group of reporters give you a ton of insight into what is going on at Woodlawn.  Give it a read and appreciate the hard work of our students.

Send in your box tops with your student.  We are having a contest between each of the grade levels, so make sure each of the box top coupons make their way to Woodlawn this year.

Halloween

On October 31st, students can wear costumes to school.  This has always been a lot of fun here at school and the teams of teachers never fail to impress with their creative costumes.  Our basic rules for everyone are these: no masks, no blood/gore, no weapons/look alike weapons and they must be appropriate for school.

Fall Conferences

Look for a message next week in this blog to see how to sign up for fall conferences.  We will begin those sign ups on Monday, November 6th.

Page Break

We are excited to be holding Stevenson High School’s second annual writing festival and competition: Page Break! The festival will occur on January 20th, 2018.  Last year was a fantastic year.  Some of your students, who attended, have joined the WIT this year and are even helping set up this year's festival.

In an effort to gather aspiring writers, The Wit, SHS’ literary magazine, and Write Club are inviting all middle school students to submit pieces to the contest and attend the workshops. All students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are encouraged to take part in the festival, and your school can submit up to 30 pieces of writing for the competition.

Page Break is a great opportunity for students in the Stevenson Consortium to receive feedback on their work and build upon their writing skills. Rewards will be awarded at a ceremony following the festival, and there will be an author keynote speaker as well as lunch.

Short story and nonfiction submissions are limited to 1000 words, and poems cannot exceed 40 lines. All writing and registration must be submitted by December 1st, 2017. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me.  In addition, you will soon be getting an email from a student liaison.

This email will be followed by some updates, including the following:

  • A link to the webpage with all necessary information.

  • Fliers dropped off at your school for distribution.

  • A linked YouTube advertisement to share with students.

  • The registration/submission form will come last.

NEW THIS YEAR:

  • Students who want to submit must also commit to attending.

  • We will send a formal registration google form and use that to track submissions and attendance.

Thank you, and we hope to see you all there!  Feel free to email me with any questions you might have at [email protected].

Finally, I have an extreme fear of missing daylight savings time weekend.  Don’t freak out, after extensive research, I found out that it isn’t until next weekend.  I feel like it isn’t discussed until it is right on top of us and then I spaz out about the whole, "do I turn the clock forward or back?".  I am not sure if any of you had this dream...once you had already graduated from college, you forgot to take a course and you weren’t allowed to graduate.  This time of year, I dream about missing daylight savings time and being an hour late for everything!  Here is my promise, you can take this one off your worry list and let me own it.  I will give you all special notice about daylight savings time next Friday.  Seems like a small thing, but let me worry about it for all of us.  You are welcome.
