Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/20/17

October is flying by!  We had Culver’s special lunch today and our haunted room is coming into shape for our Fall Party!  Today was Principal Appreciation Day, so if you forgot to contact your favorite principal, I am sure that the principal’s at Kildeer and Country Meadows will forgive you.

Fall Party

Thank you to all the students who purchased their Fall Party Ticket during our Pre-Sale today!!  The PTO will be selling tickets all of next week, (October 23rd-26th) for $10.00 each.  Students can come and experience New York's Underground Halloween!  There will be an amazing Haunted House, pizza, cookies, DJ, raffle prizes, candy count contest and much more.. For those of you who remember the T.V. show, Son of Svengoolie, “very, very scary stuff”.  I hope that every student is able to attend this fun event.  It will go from 6-8p.m. on Thursday, October 26th.  Students can and should wear costumes to school that evening.

Halloween

On October 31st, students can wear costumes to school.  This has always been a lot of fun here at school and the teams of teachers never fail to impress with their creative costumes.  Our basic rules for everyone are these: no masks, no blood/gore, no weapons/look alike weapons and they must be appropriate for school.

Red Ribbon Week

This year the Stand Strong and Catalyst members will be facilitating Red Ribbon Week activities at Woodlawn. The theme of this year’s Red Ribbon Week is, Too Smart To Start. The Too Smart To Start campaign aims to educate parents and students about the risks and consequences of e-cigarette use. Please see below for key facts about E-Cigarettes.

On Monday, October 23rd, the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will have a chance to sign banners that promote healthy lifestyle choice. The banners say, “Be Healthy. Be Drug Free. Woodlwan Students make Healthy Choices. What is your healthy choice today?

During lunch, the students will sign the banners will the healthy activity of their choice.

On Wednesday, October 25th, SHS students from the Stand Strong Group will be coming to Woodlawn to present mini skits on alcohol and drug prevention for some of our students. We are excited to see the skits that promote healthy choices.  Also on October 25th there will be a coupon giveaway. The coupons are for a free bagel or a decorated cookie at Original Bagel and Bialy for all students. On the coupon, there will be a QR Code that will send parents to a google doc.  On the google doc, there will be an intro letter about the importance of talking to your child about alcohol and drugs as well as an information sheet on e-cigarettes.  At the end of the google doc, there will be the code to activate the coupon, as well as a place for the parents to mark a box indicating that they have talked to their child about the information.  The parent can then sign the document so that their child will receive a prize (a wristband) and will be entered to win larger prizes (gift cards).  Here is the link to the google doc:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdtnjNvESk0mWKwXCZznKPeykqBviLUg_U2-ZK3FOUP3oilFQ/viewform.

On Friday, October 27th students will have another opportunity to take home the QR code. The QR code takes the parents to the same google doc found on the coupon. Stickers will be passed out to the students.

Last Week

At our faculty meeting last week, I mentioned that one of the parents presenting was from Russia, when in fact she was from the Ukraine.  This is a great reminder to me that I have to pay closer attention to where our families are from.

Box Tops

Send in your box tops with your student.  We are having a contest between each of the grade levels, so make sure each of the box top coupons make their way to Woodlawn this year.

Special Presentation

Before school today, an Indian-American family member created an engaging presentation to inform students about Indian language, culture, traditions, and celebrations. Students and staff learned about the diverse traditions that exist in India and in our own community. Within our Woodlawn community, we have a wealth of diverse cultures, languages, and traditions. If any family member in our community would like to present to students and/or staff about an important culture/tradition/celebration ( Potential Holidays/Festivals), please reach out to Ryan Zak ([email protected]) to support cultural community in our community and school.

Finally, I cannot decide how to finish my blog today.  I could talk about the Cubs and how close they came again, but that will only get me in trouble.  They are so young and so good that I fully expect to see them right back in the NLCS again next season.  Ugh.  I could talk about the Garage Sale/Estate sale at my childhood home this weekend.  Watching things with unbelievable sentimental value be sold for pennies on the dollar seems depressing.  Ugh.  I can talk about how Aaron Rodgers had surgery this week.  Nope.  Ugh.

It is funny how life is a constant ebb and flow.  I am not one who gets too high or too low so I am usually under control.  Working with middle school students, I see how they try and balance their emotions on a daily basis.  Some children balance this well and others struggle with this during their time at Woodlawn.  Please know that the staff and myself will always try to keep things in check, not matching the emotions of our children.  If there is ever an imbalance of emotion from your child, please know that you can contact us to help them control their emotions.  We have a ton of experience with this.  Have a great weekend!
