Woodlawn Principal Blog 10/13/17

Friday the 13th!  We had dessert day here at Woodlawn, so how lucky was that?  I have my superstitions but for the most part, the only thing that I avoid is walking under a ladder.  Honestly, that feels more like common sense than it does a superstition.  When I was in college and played baseball, I had many more superstitions.  Those have faded through the years and they do not even apply when watching the Cubs in the playoffs.  Speaking of the Cubs, man-o-man are they tough!  Just a few items this week.

Fall Party/Halloween

Sales for our Fall Party started today.  Students were able to purchase tickets and we had a candy raffle that one lucky student won!  Students can purchase tickets again next Friday and then the following week for this fun event.  The party will be on Thursday, October 26th.  Good times, good times.

On October 31st, students can wear costumes to school.  This has always been a lot of fun here at school and the teams of teachers never fail to impress with their creative costumes.  Our basic rules for everyone are these: no masks, no blood/gore, no weapons/look alike weapons and they must be appropriate for school.  Further details to follow.

Sports Physicals

Our next sports seasons are  coming up and parents, make sure your child has an up to date physical or they will miss out on tryouts.  If you are unsure if your student has an up to date physical, please contact Nurse Kaufmann in the Woodlawn office.

Dessert Day

Our students were treated to wonderful dessert day today!  Dairy Queen smoothies.  Yum, yum.  Next Friday is Special Lunch.  Oh to be a Woodlawn student.

Box Tops

It is almost Box Top time of year.  All year long you have worked on cutting out those tiny box top coupons and it is just about time to turn them in.  Information will be coming from the Community Service Club soon.

Meghan Bird

Our wonderful assistant principal, just bought a new residence. I heard that it is a good size, which will make it the largest Bird house I will have ever seen  (6th grade parents, I had a whole section about bird sayings last year in my blog).

Finally... almost weekly,  the Woodlawn staff has a faculty meeting.  Our focus is often times designed around staff development, specifically working to improve our teaching practices.  This past Tuesday, working with Mr. Zak (our Culturally Linguistically Diverse teacher) we invited 4 parents (one from Russia, Mexico, India and El Salvador) in to talk about the experience that they and their child have had within our school and community.  We also invited a parent whose child has severe food allergies, giving us an insight into how their family works through  everyday challenges. This was one of our best faculty meetings we have had during my tenure as the Woodlawn principal.  Our parents shared experiences and talked about the cultural differences between the United States and their homeland.  In each case, I noted an honest appreciation for our country while respecting the traditions of their native country.  Recognizing that I have made cultural awareness a priority over the last couple of years, this positive experience took me by surprise.   Walking through the hallways and our lunchroom, our students embrace the friendships that all students provide.  Thank you to all of the parents and here are a few pictures from our faculty meeting:
