September 29, 2017

September was a good month at Woodlawn.  We had a warm spell, but it is starting to look like fall weather is coming our way.  Many of our 8th graders will be heading off to D.C. in about a week and the weather should be beautiful!  If you have never been to D.C., you need to check it out.  The museums are amazing and I absolutely love the monuments. I will be happy to share my D.C. favorites with you, just send me an e-mail.  I am not attending this year, so I will miss out on the 6a.m. flight with 100 of my closest 14 year old friends.  Think of your middle school child and multiply by 100.  Anyways, just a few items in the blog this week.

So Cool

All sixth graders participated in a book tasting this week in our school learning center. Students had an opportunity to taste a variety of books of different genres and topics so that they could choose a favorite read for book clubs in Language Arts class. Ask your students this weekend what books they added to their To Be Read lists.

From Fireman Tony

Hello my American Heroes,

I have been educating at Woodlawn Middle School over 10 years, it is near and dear to me.  Please help me.

Thank you for passing on the information of this grant opportunity and voting if you have already done so.  The support has been awesome! But, this contest ends in 8 days and we are currently alongside another front runner for the grant.  Every vote counts.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!  I am hoping you will continue to help us with promoting our campaign to your student parents, community friends and family by voting and sharing the flyer and/or link to Countryside Fire Protection District Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/countrysidefiredist/  for the Step Up & Stand Out grant CFPD applied for last month.

The attached flyer explains our goal and shows a picture of the video to vote for,  click on it once you are at the CFPD Facebook page.

Thank you for your support.

Finally, at the end of December and the beginning of January, I ran a series of blog posts that encaptured what Woodlawn is all about.  I wrote what I want Woodlawn to be, the staff wrote their thoughts down and it was finalized by what the students want Woodlawn to be.  It was really cool and I received many positive comments from the parents all throughout the school year.  I am going to rerun those thoughts in a blog very soon.  I value the culture of this building and want Woodlawn to be a partnership with the parents and a safe place for students.  Be on the lookout for this rerun.

Finally part 2, My Packers beat the Bears.  There has been a lot of Bears apathy over the last number of years.  Rivalries are fun when both teams are good.  Look at the Cubs and Cardinals for example.   A former Cardinal announcer, referring to the Cubs long streak of not winning a World Series once quipped, “Anyone could have a bad century.”  There were years and years of heartache for the Cubs, but recently that has all changed.  This morning my wife heard on the radio that the Cubs had eliminated the Cardinals from the playoffs.  Her response to no one was, “Well isn’t that a shame.”  I am sure many Cub fans feel the same way. Anyways... I digress.  When I was in college, the Bears had a 25 game lead over the Packers in the all time head to head matchups.  I remember saying to myself, “We will never catch them”.  Well, after last night the Packers now hold a 1 game lead over the Bears in the all time series.  I am amazed.  Keep the faith Bear fans, you will be back.
