Woodlawn Principal Blog August 25, 2017

Our first full week with students is in the books.  It is amazing to see how quickly our students, especially our 6th graders, find their way around our building.  We have curriculum nights coming up this week, thus I am looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible.

Curriculum Nights

This is it!!  Curriculum nights are here and it is your chance to meet your teachers in person.  Find out what your child will be learning, put a face with a name and walk the schedule that your middle school child does every day.

6th grade will be Monday, August 28th.

7th & 8th grade will be on Tuesday, August 29th.

Each night begins in the gym at 7p.m.  Bring your schedule or stop in the office for a copy.

iPad Awareness

Parents, thank you for your help.  Continue talking with your student about taking care of their iPad. After 4 iPads were broken in the first couple of days, we didn’t have any broken iPads this week.  I will give full credit to the parents and the meaningful conversations you had with your child.  Again, remind them to not throw their backpacks, mistreat their iPad or to have it around water.  I will give you an update next week.

Sport Physicals, Parent Consent Forms and Concussion Information

Every student trying out or participating on a team must have a current Sports Physical, Parent Consent Form and Concussion Information on file here at Woodlawn.  Soccer & Cross Country begin Monday.   Girls Basketball started last week.

6th Grade Parents

Boy oh boy do we have something for you!  Next Friday, September 1st, the PTO will be welcoming 6th grade parents into the building to talk about the beginning of the school year, then have you stay to witness our lunch period.  We will be supplying pizza lunch for our 6th graders on this day.  If there is extra pizza, parents can have at it!  This fun event begins at 11:45a.m. and will last until 12:30p.m.

MAP Retakes

Will be Monday - Wednesday of next week.

An Invitation to Newcomers to Our District 96 Community

Has your family recently moved to the United States or are you and your student(s) new to this area?

On September 13th at 7 p.m., parents of registered students in Kindergarten–Grade 8 are invited to Woodlawn, for a program to welcome you to our community and introduce you to our District 96 culture.

Learn about and understand our home-school connection, classroom dynamics, patterns of communication to expect from our teachers and administrators, and more. Ask questions and help us understand how we can best support you as newcomers acclimating to the culture of a new school district, neighborhood, and community.

While all interested parents are welcome, please note that the focus of this evening is not specifically curricular and general procedural information, which will be shared with all District 96 parents on their students’ designated grade-level Curriculum Nights.

Rather, this is an informational opportunity for parents who–like their students–are experiencing our social customs and practices for teaching and learning for the first time.

District 96 Band & Orchestra Boosters – Membership ToolKit Sign-Up is Now Active!

Do you have a student participating in the band or orchestra programs this school year?  If so, you will want to stay “in the know” and create an account in the Boosters Membership ToolKit!  In our ToolKit you will have access to the order forms for the required concert polo shirts, forms to order items for Booster fundraisers and to register for events (such as treats for after-concert socials, Gift Cards, Booster membership/donations, and the “End of the Year” party) as well as forms to sign up to volunteer at Booster events.  You will also be able to make purchases with your credit or debit card!  Offerings will be added throughout the year as we get closer to event dates.  Please note that most forms will now be located here, and will no longer be sent out by your band or orchestra director, so it is important that you set up an account to stay informed!  To create an account and get started head to https://bandandorchestraboosters.membershiptoolkit.com and follow the prompts.  If you already have a Membership ToolKit account with the PTO at your school, you can use the same e-mail and password to set up this account.  Questions?  Please contact Sharon Anderson at [email protected].

Finally, this is one that I am going to give full credit to my wife.  Each year, Beloit College comes out with a mindset list of incoming college freshmen that they share with their staff.  This list was first begun in 2002 and is one of the highlights of my year.  Originally designed so that the professors have a better idea of their students, these items have NEVER been a part of the incoming freshman’s lives.

Here is just one example:

This group of college freshmen have never heard Harry Caray sing take me out to the ball game.

Check out this list and if you are anything like me, I cringe at how fast time is passing:
