Friday, February 10, 2017 a.k.a. Spleen Day

Long week, fast week, short week, slow week, who knows anymore?  In my eyes, they are all fast weeks.  Having been in a bunch of classrooms recently, I really wish that I had the opportunity to go to school and learn the way our children are currently learning.  The lessons I get to witness are amazing and our students are learning at high levels.  There was a debate in Science today where the class each took a side of an argument, and with a jury, they spoke eloquently using research based arguments to defend their stance.  Science research with a Language Arts twist.  Really cool.

The Woodlawn PTO is selling custom-made school supply kits for your student(s) for use in the 2017-18 school year. Skip the last minute shopping and support your the PTO by purchasing a supply kit! School supply kits will be conveniently available for pick-up at "Locker Set-Up Day" in August.
To kick-off the sale, the PTO is launching a new database management system to take orders as well as process credit card payments through Membership Toolkit. Parents are required to CREATE AN ACCOUNT with the Membership Toolkit (Add link here from list below.)  Membership Toolkit will continue to serve you throughout the 2017-18 school year to sign-up for PTO volunteer opportunities, register and pay for PTO events, activities and fundraisers.

Cultural Arts
On Monday our students were treated to a performance entitled "Amazing Africa!" We all learned about African music, dance and language from a group of talented musicians from Africa. Some students and staff participated in a dance lesson. Everyone was encouraged to "always be your best self" and remember that "we are all different but we are all the same." It was a fun, high energy performance with a great message!

PTO Executive Board Openings
This is one of those things that I haven’t received any parent feedback. I have been informed that the  Woodlawn PTO will have a couple of opening on our Executive Board next year.  If you are interested, please send an e-mail to me and I will forward your interest to our PTO President for next year, Missy Stevens.  Selections will happen before April, but send me your interest right away.

Community Service Club-Send in those items!!!!
The Community Service Club is is collecting miscellaneous items to send to the troops overseas.  Each teacher has a bag in their homeroom where students can put the collected items for two more weeks.  You can send to our heroes: cards, card games, footballs, magazines, any non-chocolate candy, microwave popcorn, lip balm, dried meats, crackers or snacks, gym, Soduko books, small games, prepackaged cookies, body wash or shampoo, trail mix, sunflower seeds, dice games, Yahtzee and/or adult coloring books or pencils.  Again, we will be collecting for one more week, so let’s support our troops!

Finally, I apologize for going overboard the last couple of weeks on the “finally” part of my blog.  I will keep it short today.  One of my idiosyncrasies is that I fixate on certain dates.  Today is one of those days.  On February 10, 1977, I had my spleen removed.  I am not going to tell you the boring details, but at 11 years old, my spleen was gone.  Don’t worry, you can function without a spleen.  (FYI- A spleen filters dead red blood cells) So, as the 40th anniversary of spleen removal day was approaching, I talked about this milestone with everyone.  A lot.  Today, in tribute or to get me over my fixation, the staff presented me with a spleen cake.  I am pretty sure this is an all time first for anyone.  Ever.  If you are having a rough day today, just be thankful you still have your spleen.
